Google Maps Changes Massive Design On Android Apps
Google Maps changed its appearance design recently. Through 9to5Google, a massive overhaul occurred in the appearance of the Android application. In February, they started testing out the new design which was quite striking. Although on some Google accounts on Android devices, the update was withdrawn after several weeks of being displayed, but it is now re-released with some quite striking improvements.
Significant display changes
Based on 9to5Google this new design eliminates some full-screen display and replaces it with a sheet that maintains the background context. Ideal for in-app navigation, this design takes some hints from Apple Maps in a way that better emphasizes the map layer across the application. You can close it by tapping the Close button — which is on the top right, right next to the Share button — while the corners have more visible arches.
Multiple view deletion
One change that Google made from the first iteration of this design is that the sheets are no longer multiple. That may be an attempt to create a depth effect with a cleaner single-sheet approach. In addition to being simpler, you can see a little more information per screen.
Simplification of direction search
The biggest aspect of this redesign is when looking for directions. At the top, you’ll only see columns for starting location and destination. No longer performing in full from end to end, while the options for driving, public transport, walking, vehicle reservations, and cycling have been moved to the bottom to improve accessibility.
Please note that Google Maps redesign is not yet widespread (version 11.127.x on Android) and may still be in the testing stage. This is an update from the server side and until now we have only seen it on one account.
