Samsung SSD 990 EVO: The world’s first SSD that can operate in PCIe 4.0 X4 or PCIe 5.0 X2 mode

Samsung recently accidentally revealed their Samsung SSD 990 EVO. The uniqueness of this new product is its ability to operate in two modes: PCIe 4.0 x4 or PCIe 5.0 x2. At the same time, the throughput of the drive remains the same in both cases. Today, the manufacturer officially introduced it.

Impressive reading and writing speed

The latest product offers sequential reading speeds of up to 5,000 and write speeds of up to 4,200 MB/s, as well as random reading and writing performance of 700,000 and 800,000 IOPS, respectively. This SSD will compete with cheap solutions such as Teamgroup MP44L or more popular, WD_BLACK SN770.

The advantage of this SSD is the use of a 5nm controller that is more energy efficient and a 133 layers of V6P TLC NAND flash memory chip. This SSD does not have its own DRAM cache and uses part of the PC storage system for the purpose.

According to Samsung, this hybrid drive design was developed with the PCIe 5.0 x2 interface to meet the current computing needs while anticipating the needs of future devices on the SSD. With the bandwidth of four PCIe 4.0 lines and two PCIe 5.0 lines the same, the use of one of the operating modes does not result in a decrease in performance. However, the use of two PCIe 5.0 lines can slightly improve the drive power efficiency in certain use cases.
