“The shorter the time lag between the shift of the lever and the thump that is felt, the better the condition of the transmission,” he said. He explained that the ideal time is between one and two seconds. If the pause is too long, there will most likely be a problem with the automatic transmission system.
In addition, Hasan also suggested checking the ability of the automatic transmission to hold the car on an incline without stepping on the gas pedal. “The transmission that is still healthy should be able to hold the car stop for a moment without the need to step on the gas,” he added.
Stall test test to determine the condition of the clutch
Ekowati, Technical Leader of Auto2000 Kalimalang, East Jakarta, explained about the Stall Test that can be done to check the clutch condition of automatic cars. This test is carried out in the following way:
- Start the engine and pull the handbrake.
- Enter the gear to position D (Drive).
- Hold the brake pedal, then step on the gas pedal a bit deep and hold it for three seconds.
- Pay attention to the position of the rpm needle on the dashboard.
If the rpm needle increases between 1,800 to 2,200 rpm, it means that the clutch is still in good condition. However, if the needle stops above 2,200 rpm, it means that there is a slip of the clutch. Meanwhile, if the needle stops below 1,500 rpm, it indicates that the engine power is no longer prime.
After performing the Stall Test in position D, repeat the same step but this time by inserting the gear into position R (reverse) to check the clutch performance of the reverse.

Although stall tests and time lag tests can be done independently, Hasan stressed that for more accurate results, scanning using special diagnostic tools is required. This tool is able to detect damage that is not visible to the naked eye.
