IDI: AI is only a tool, the doctor is responsible for the diagnosis

the role of AI technology in health services
The use of artificial intelligence (AI) technology in the world of health is increasingly becoming a hot topic of conversation. In this context, Iqbal Mochtar, the administrator of the Indonesian Doctors Association (IDI), emphasized that AI should be seen as a tool that supports the duties of doctors, not replacing their roles. This opinion emerged in response to the statement by the Minister of Health Budi Gunadi Sadikin which stated that doctors who rejected AI would be left behind from technological developments.
Iqbal explained that AI has great potential to improve the quality of diagnosis and treatment of patients. According to him, this technology can be likened to other medical aids, such as a stethoscope, laboratory tests, or stress tests. All of these tools are used to assist doctors in making appropriate and accurate medical decisions.
AI as a medical aid
AI technology can play a role in processing medical data quickly and accurately. For example, in the interpretation of the results of radiological examinations such as X-rays or laboratories, AI can provide an initial picture which is then compared with a doctor’s assessment. This helps the doctor in making a more accurate diagnosis and according to the patient’s condition.
However, Iqbal emphasized that the final decision remains with the doctor. AI only serves as a support in the diagnostic process. Doctors still have to carry out in-depth clinical analysis in order to provide appropriate treatment measures for patients.
the benefits and limitations of AI in medicine
AI can also be used to explore other possible diagnoses or provide treatment advice based on patient data. However, its use must be carried out with careful consideration. Iqbal considered that AI should not be blamed if there was a misdiagnosis. Therefore, doctors need to understand how AI works and is able to distinguish between technological recommendations and real patient needs.
In this digital era, doctors in the future are expected to be able to utilize AI optimally. However, Iqbal emphasized that clinical skills and understanding of the relevance of the diagnosis remains the key. The doctor must be able to evaluate whether the diagnosis given by AI is in accordance with the patient’s condition and whether the recommended treatment is feasible.
Conclusion
In general, AI is a very useful technology in the world of health. However, his role remains supportive and must not replace the role of a doctor. The use of AI must be carried out carefully and based on proper medical considerations. Thus, AI can be an effective tool in improving the quality of health services without losing the competence and responsibilities of doctors.
