Illegal Cell Phone Assembly Closing Factory in West Jakarta
Minister of Trade Budi Santoso took firm action against an illegal mobile phone assembly factory located in the Green Court shophouse area, Cengkareng, West Jakarta. The action was carried out on Wednesday (23/7/2025). According to information obtained, the factory has assembled at least 5,100 units of mobile phones from well-known brands such as Oppo, Vivo, Redmi, and iPhone.
During the exposure to the media crew, a number of fake cellphones and illegally assembled results were exhibited. At first glance, the packaging of the product looks very convincing, similar to the new smartphone packaging from the official manufacturer. This makes it difficult for potential buyers to distinguish between real and fake cellphones only through the packaging.
The Director General of Consumer Protection and Commercial Order (PKTN) of the Ministry of Home Affairs, Moga Simatupang, explained some of the characteristics of fake cellphones that can be observed. Here’s the explanation:
FAKE HP CHARACTERISTICS
very cheap price

Fake phones often experience a long boot process, both for Android and iOS operating systems. This is different from the original phone which is usually fast and stable.Bad after-sales service
Fake phones usually do not have adequate after-sales service. For example, the warranty is only provided by the distributor if purchased offline, while in the marketplace there is usually no service center service.Minimal box contents
Although the packaging looks complete, the contents of the box from a fake cellphone are often incomplete. For example, there is no manual or official warranty card.poor signal quality
Fake HP is most likely to have poor signal quality. The signal can be lost suddenly even though the device is in an area with a strong signal.
Tips for Choosing a Safe Phone
I hope you also give advice so that people are wiser in buying cellphones. He advises to always ensure that there is an official warranty from the manufacturer or distributor. If you only offer a distributor warranty, you should not open the packaging because it could be a fake phone.
In addition, consumers are advised to buy at official stores or partners who work with brands. In the marketplace, make sure the store has a label such as “official store” or “official store” to ensure product quality.
How to Check Cell Phone Authenticity
One of the easiest ways to ensure the authenticity of your phone is to check the IMEI number. IMEI stickers are usually found in the box or the back of the device. If it doesn’t exist, the user can use the USSD code *#06# to display the IMEI number.
After getting the IMEI number, match what is listed on the box. If so, then the phone is genuine. If no IMEI data is found, the phone is most likely fake.
To make sure, consumers can also check the IMEI database on the official government website or the site of each brand such as Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo, and Apple.
Report If You Get a Fake Phone
If you find a fake cellphone, the public can report to the Ministry of Commerce through various channels, such as WhatsApp (0853 1111 1010), telephone (021.341839), email (complaint.konsumen@kemendag.go.id), or the website (www.simpktn.kemendag.go.id).
