The basic difference between RGB and CMYK in the world of art and technology

In the world of art and technology, terms such as RGB and CMYK often appear. Both are very important color models, but often cause confusion. Although they look different, they actually come from the same color theory, namely the primary color theory. Understanding the difference and the relationship between the two is the key to making sure that the colors you see on the computer screen will look exactly the same when printed on paper.

Traditional Primary Color: Art Foundation

The primary color system of RYB (Red, Yellow, Blue) has been used by artists for many years. This system is a subtractive model, meaning that the mixing of the pigment produces color. Here is a basic example of color combining:

  • red + yellow = orange
  • yellow + blue = green
  • red + blue = purple

When these three colors are mixed, the result is a dark color that is close to black. The more colors you add, the more light is absorbed (reduced), resulting in a darker color. This model is dominant in traditional arts, such as painting and coloring.

RGB: Light Color System (Additive)

RGB (Red, Green, Blue) is a color model that works with light. This system uses the principle of additives, where colors are created by adding or emitting light.

How it works:

RGB is used in electronic devices such as computer monitors, TVs, and mobile screens. Each pixel has three sub-pixels: red, green, and blue. The light intensity of each sub-pixel can be adjusted as needed.

Mixed results:

When these three colors are mixed in full intensity, they will produce a white color. The more light you add, the brighter the color. This is why a dead screen is black, but when it lights up, the color is bright.

Conceptually, the primary color of RGB is the opposite of the secondary color of RYB. For example, a mixture of red and green (RGB) will produce yellow, which is the primary color in RYB.

CMYK: Print color system (subtractive)

CMYK (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Key/Black) is a color model used for printing. This system works similarly to the RYB model, that is, as a subtractive system.

How it works:

The printing press sprays small dots of cyan, magenta, yellow, and black ink on white paper. Paper absorbs light, and our eyes see reflected colors.

Mixed results:

When cyan, magenta, and yellow colors are mixed, they will absorb all the light and produce black. The letter “K” for black is added in order to obtain a darker and pure black color, because the CMY mixture does not always produce the perfect black.

relationship with RYB:

CMY is a more accurate and modern version of the primary color RYB. The magenta pigment is more effective than red, and cyan is more effective than blue in mixing secondary and tertiary colors.

Use of RGB and CMYK in design work

To ensure optimal results, it is important to know when to use it:

  • Use RGB For jobs that will be displayed on digital screens, such as web design, social media, and video.
  • Use CMYK For jobs to be printed, such as brochures, business cards, and posters.

If you design a logo on your computer (using RGB) and print it, you may notice a slight color difference. This happens because of different color models. By understanding these differences, you can work more efficiently and ensure accurate end results.
