Supercomputers for a Greener Future: Gigabyte’s AI Vision in Malaysia

Artificial intelligence (AI) has transformed the technological landscape in a short span of time, reshaping how we interact with the world. As AI continues to evolve, the focus is shifting towards making it more accessible to a broader audience. This vision is being championed by Gigabyte, a Taiwanese computer manufacturer that showcased its ambitious plans for democratizing AI at this year’s Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona.
Jack Chou, a brand marketing specialist at Gigabyte, emphasized the importance of accessibility in AI development. “We believe that AI will be good for everyone when it’s more accessible to more people,” he said. The company aims to provide AI solutions across various scales, from rack-level infrastructure to end-user applications, ensuring that AI computing becomes more widespread and inclusive.
Gigabyte, founded in 1986, initially gained recognition as a leading manufacturer of computer motherboards. Over the years, the company has expanded its offerings significantly, venturing into full-stack AI infrastructure and, more recently, AI-driven telecom networks and specialized AI supercomputers.
From entertainment to empowerment
A key aspect of Gigabyte’s new strategy is a shift from providing computing solutions primarily for entertainment and gaming to empowering users through AI. “In the past, we provided computing solutions for end users that might be used more for entertainment and gaming, but now we believe we’re empowering more people with AI computing,” Chou explained. This shift allows individuals to develop their own AI models at home and create innovative AI applications.
Gigabyte has also been exploring physical AI, which involves the use of robots to enhance productivity and efficiency in manufacturing. “We develop the big brain and the small brain for physical AI in the data centre, and then train the robots’ intelligence on clusters, racks, and servers. When the robots are out on the field, our embedded industrial systems allow the robot brain to see and interact with the real world,” said Chou.
Responsible AI innovation
With growing concerns about the environmental impact of AI data centers, sustainability remains a priority for Gigabyte. “Gigabyte pursues green sustainable AI computing by incorporating advanced cooling technologies, such as direct liquid cooling and immersion cooling,” Chou noted. These technologies help manage thermal output with less power, reducing the overall energy consumption of AI computing.
“The AI data center actually uses less power overall, so we can have better performance, but a greener, more sustainable operation.” This commitment to sustainability ensures that AI innovation does not come at the expense of the environment.
