YouTube Shorts Now Has a Time Limit, Here’s How to Enable It

YouTube’s New Feature to Limit Shorts Watching Time for Teens
YouTube, one of the largest video platforms in the world, has just launched a new feature that aims to limit the daily duration of watching short video content or Shorts for teenage users. This feature is designed to help maintain a balance between digital media use and daily life.
YouTube’s Commitment to Protecting Teen Users
Global Head of Healthcare YouTube & Google Health Garth Graham said that this feature is part of YouTube’s commitment to protecting teenage users. He said, “Today, I’m proud to say that we’re launching a new feature that gives users control and sets limits on how long they can watch Shorts.”
This feature is an important step in YouTube’s efforts to ensure that teenage users are not stuck watching short videos for too long, which can have an impact on their mental health and life habits.
How to Enable the Shorts Watching Limits Feature
Users can set and adjust this daily limit via the menu:
- Settings then select General
- After that, slide the button on the option “Shorts feed limit” to activate the restriction feature.
There are several reminder time options available, namely 15 minutes, 30 minutes, 45 minutes, 1 hour and 2 hours. Once the time limit is reached, users will receive a notification indicating that the Shorts feed has been paused for that day.
Expansion of Parental Control Features
YouTube also plans to expand its parental controls feature to integrate Shorts time limits. In this way, parents who use supervised accounts can proactively set limits that users cannot ignore.
This feature is expected to help parents more easily monitor their children’s use of YouTube services, thereby ensuring that their use of digital media remains safe and healthy.
Additional Protection for Teens
In addition to the time limit feature, YouTube also provides additional protection for teens and pre-teens through YouTube’s recommendation system. This system helps them find videos that match their interests and that are fun to watch.
This online video playback platform also adds extra protection to video sequences for teens. The aim is to limit recommendations for content that is considered safe if watched once, but could be problematic if watched repeatedly.
The frequency of problematic content appearing for teenagers around the world will also be reduced to prevent excessive repeat viewing habits. This is expected to help maintain mental health and healthy viewing habits for young users.
