Modular HP is back, Tecno presents a thin phone with advanced magnetic technology

Modular mobile technology is revived by Tecno
The trend of modular phones that had sinked was now being discussed again. Tecno revived the concept through a super thin device with advanced magnetic technology. At the MWC 2026 event, Tecno introduced a concept smartphone with a different approach from mobile phones in general. This device carries a modular design that can be disassembled easily.
The body thickness is only about 4.9 mm. The figure makes it look very slim and futuristic. Although thin, this phone still supports a variety of additional accessories. All modules are installed using a high precision magnet system. The technology used is called Modular Magnetic Interconnection Technology. This system allows the module to stick firmly without conventional physical connectors.
Users only need to attach the accessory to the back of the device. The magnet mechanism will directly lock the module position automatically. This approach feels more practical than the old modular concept. No bolts or complicated mechanisms need to be opened.
Tecno presents about ten different modules for this device. Each module is designed for specific functions as per the user’s needs. One that stole the attention was the ultra-thin power bank module. The thickness is about 4.5 mm so that it still maintains a slim design. This module provides additional power without making the phone feel heavy. Suitable for active users who are often outdoors.
In addition, Tecno also exhibited an action camera module. This accessory allows video capture at a more flexible angle. There is also a telephoto lens module for long distance photography. The module utilizes the phone screen as the main viewfinder. The photos are claimed to be more detailed than the standard camera. This gives the experience such as using an additional professional camera.
The back of the device is divided into several magnetic zones. The zone helps users install modules with precision. Tecno designs magnetic joints to keep them stable when used in motion. The system is claimed to be safe for daily use.
Device design comes in two different versions. The Atom Edition looks minimalist with silver color and red accents. While the mode edition carries a combination of gray and gold. It looks more experimental and futuristic.
The modular concept has actually been carried by several large manufacturers. But many fail because the design is too thick and expensive. Tecno tries to overcome these weaknesses by keeping the device thin. The magnetic approach is the main solution offered.
This concept also opens up opportunities for device updates without having to replace the main unit. Users only need to buy new modules as needed. This approach is considered more environmentally friendly. Electronic waste has the potential to decrease because there is no need to change cellphones often.
Although it looks promising, this device is still a concept status. Tecno has not confirmed its commercial release schedule. However, his presence at MWC 2026 attracted the attention of many visitors. Many consider this concept as a breath of fresh air in the smartphone industry.
Tecno’s moves show ambition to look different in the global market. This brand wants to be known as an innovator, not just an affordable player. If this concept is actually mass produced, the smartphone market can change again. Modular HP may find its momentum again through more mature magnetic technology.
