ChatGPT Boycotted 4 Million People, Openai Lost IDR 238 Trillion

ChatGPT Boycott Action Reaches Four Million People

On Monday (9/3) at 08.11 WIB, more than four million people joined the ChatGPT boycott through the quitgpt site. This action shows dissatisfaction with the OpenAI policy, the company that developed the famous AI model. The company estimates a loss of US$ 14 billion or around Rp 238 trillion this year, before considering the impact of this boycott.

This boycott action began after OpenAI agreed to cooperate with the United States Department of War (Pentagon). Previously, the Pentagon terminated the contract with anthropic and included AI company on the list of ‘Supply Chain Risk’, a term commonly used for foreign companies that are considered to endanger national security such as Huawei.

Anthropic has received criticism from US President Donald Trump and the Pentagon for expressing rejection of the use of his AI model, Claude, for mass surveillance of the population and autonomous weapons. This is the main reason for many parties to boycott CHATGPT.

Several well-known figures also participated in this action. The cast of the Hulk in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Mark Ruffalo, and singer Katy Perry also boycotted chatgpt. In addition, OpenAI was also highlighted because one of its top brass, Greg Brockman, made a donation of US $ 25 million to Make America Great Again Inc (MAGA Inc.), a Super PAC which was established to support Donald Trump and other Republican candidates.

Brockman claims that the donation was given to serve the OpenAI mission to benefit mankind. However, this has caused controversy, mainly because of the relationship between OpenAI and certain political parties.

The situation worsened after Trump’s demands

The situation worsened last week when the Trump administration demanded that AI companies give the Pentagon unlimited access to their technology, including for mass surveillance and autonomous weapons. Anthropic rejects this claim, while OpenAI agrees to cooperate.

The OpenAI internal document seen by The Information shows a projected loss of US$ 14 billion in 2026. This loss is estimated to increase three times compared to last year. The projected loss also reached US$ 44 billion in 2028.

However, OpenAI hopes to return a profit of US$ 14 billion in 2029. The report also revealed that the company plans to spend US$ 200 billion by the end of this decade. Of these, about 60% to 80% will be used to train and run the AI model.

policies and their impact

The OpenAI policy in collaboration with the Pentagon and donations from Greg Brockman has sparked widespread reactions from the public and professionals. Many people feel that this policy can threaten national security and the ethics of using AI technology.

In addition, the issue of the use of AI for surveillance and autonomous weapons is also a hot topic of debate. Some AI companies, such as Anthropic, reject the government’s demands to provide unlimited access, while OpenAI is willing to work together.

With the bigger boycott action, OpenAI is faced with a tough challenge. Companies must balance between business interests and social responsibility, especially in the context of the increasingly sensitive use of AI technology.
