Dangerous Mistakes When Late Braking on the Highway

late braking technique in daily driving

In the world of motorcycle racing, there is a technique known as late braking. This technique is usually used by racers at the last seconds when passing through corners. The main goal is to maintain as much speed as possible while still controlling the vehicle.

However, this technique is often misunderstood and improperly applied by motorists on the highway. In a public road environment, small mistakes can be fatal. Here are some common mistakes that occur when doing late braking techniques on the highway:

don’t understand the brake capability limit

Many riders think that the brakes on their motorbikes work as effectively as brakes on professional racing motorbikes. In fact, the brake system on the daily motor is designed for daily use, not for extreme braking. Road conditions such as wet, sandy, or slippery will greatly reduce the traction of the tires and the effectiveness of the brakes.

Riders trying to emulate late braking techniques without really understanding the limits of their own bikes—such as how fast they can stop without locking the wheels or losing control—will be in very dangerous situations. Understanding the response of your bike is key, and this can only be gained through experience and practice.

Changed traffic conditions

The racing circuit is a controlled environment, where all the racers move in one direction and follow the same rules. The highway is much different. Unpredictable traffic dynamics is the biggest challenge.

A car in front of you can suddenly brake suddenly, pedestrians can cross from behind the bus, or other vehicles can change lanes without giving a signal. If you focus too much on braking at the last point, you will sacrifice a very important situational awareness. Losing this focus in just seconds can cause a collision or a serious accident.

Lack of practice and experience

Late braking is not a technique that can be mastered overnight. Professional racers spend thousands of hours practicing this technique, understanding every millimeter of their bike’s movement, and feeling every change in tire traction.

Many motorists on public roads try this technique without adequate training. They probably just saw it in the racing video and thought it was easy. Without enough experience, they tend to make miscalculations—too fast to enter corners, step on the brakes, or even press the brakes too hard so the tires lock.

It is important to remember that the highway is not a racing circuit. The skills and techniques that apply in racing circuits are not always safe or relevant for use on public roads. Before trying the late braking technique, train in a safe place such as an empty parking lot and fully understand the limits of your motorbike and yourself. Safety is a top priority, and no trophy is worth life.
