13+ built-in content settings for Instagram teen accounts

META Indonesia launched 13+ default content settings for Instagram teen accounts. This update was announced at the Digital Smart Event 2026: Safe Teenagers, Calm Parents in Jakarta on May 22, 2026. This step is part of the meta efforts to strengthen youth protection in digital space.

This new setting is inspired by the 13+ film age classification. META says the approach is designed to get teenagers to have a more age-appropriate online experience, especially when using Instagram and Facebook.

META cooperates with the Ministry of Communication and Digital of the Republic of Indonesia, ECPAT Indonesia, parents, creators, and a number of other stakeholders in the event. Berni Moestafa, Head of Meta Public Policy in Indonesia, explained that this update aims to help parents feel calmer when teenagers use social media.

“We want to help parents feel calmer when teenagers use social media through a safer and age-appropriate online experience,” said Berni Moestafa.

Expansion of content protection

Previously, META had limited recommendations for suggestive sexual content, disturbing graphic images, and adult content such as selling cigarettes and alcohol to teenagers. Now, the protection is extended to more types of content.

Meta will limit uploads with harsh language, malicious action displays, and content that can encourage risky behavior. One example is an upload that displays equipment related to marijuana.

These changes also target account interactions. Teenagers cannot follow or interact with accounts that regularly share content that is not age-appropriate. The account also cannot contact teenagers via DM, follow their profile, or interact in the comments column.

In the search feature, the meta extends restrictions for sensitive and mature topics. This restriction also applies to keywords that are disguised or intentionally misspelled.

For content experience, uploads that violate the Age Guidelines will not appear in Explore, Reels, Feeds, Stories, Comments, or links shared via DM. This rule still applies even though the content comes from accounts that have been followed by teenagers.

Age-appropriate AI Experience

META also updates the AI experience for teenagers. The company ensures that the AI response remains age-appropriate and relevant for users aged 13 and over. In addition to the default settings, META introduces the Limited Content feature. This feature is intended for parents who want to apply stricter restrictions.

When activated, adolescents not only get stronger content filtering, but also can’t see, give, or receive comments.
