OpenAI Launches GPT-Live Voice for ChatGPT Users

OpenAI Unveils GPT-Live: A New Era for ChatGPT Voice

OpenAI has started rolling out a redesigned voice mode to ChatGPT users, replacing the previous Advanced Voice Mode with two new models: GPT-Live-1 and GPT-Live-1 mini. This update is available to both free and paid consumer accounts and comes just a day before the release of the GPT-5.6 model family.

The primary reason for this shift lies in the architecture of the new models. Unlike earlier voice models that required users to finish their sentences before responding, GPT-Live utilizes a full-duplex architecture. This means it can process incoming speech while simultaneously generating output speech. As a result, users can interrupt, pause, or even have the model interject with sounds like “mhmm” to indicate it’s listening.

Features and Accessibility

Free ChatGPT accounts now default to GPT-Live-1 mini, while users on the Go, Plus, and Pro tiers receive the more advanced GPT-Live-1. The update is accessible via iOS, Android, and the web, and since ChatGPT works through CarPlay, the update also extends to in-car systems. OpenAI has remastered the nine voices in ChatGPT for the new models.

According to OpenAI, GPT-Live is designed to be a conversationalist rather than a reasoning engine. For complex tasks, it can delegate actions such as web searches, reasoning, and multistep answers to GPT-5.5 without interrupting the voice conversation. Users can also choose between a quick-response mode and a high-effort mode.

Additional Enhancements

OpenAI is introducing near real-time speech translation and visual cards for weather, stock prices, and sports scores. This allows users to receive some information on screen instead of having it read aloud. Over 150 million people use ChatGPT features like Voice and Dictation each week.

Challenges and Limitations

Despite its improvements, GPT-Live still has some limitations. According to TechCrunch, Hindi translations had a strong American accent and used stiff, formal language. OpenAI notes that the model works best for “some of the most common languages in ChatGPT,” but there may be issues with accents or fluency in certain languages. Additionally, voice integration with videos and screen sharing is not supported yet.

OpenAI emphasizes that GPT-Live is not an AI companion. It has implemented safeguards to ensure age-appropriate responses for teens and provides crisis resources if conversations touch on self-harm topics. Audio clips from Live and Advanced Voice conversations are retained for 30 days and are not used for training unless users choose to share them.

Future Vision

Atty Eleti, product lead for ChatGPT Voice, shared his experience of holding 30- to 40-minute conversations with the feature during walks. He believes voice could become a primary way for people to handle longer, more complex tasks. Eleti stated:

“The kind of amazing use cases that we see people using Codex and ChatGPT to accomplish, we think voice can be the future interface to all kinds of work.”

GPT-5.6 Launch and API Access

The voice update is separate from the upcoming GPT-5.6 model release, which is set for Thursday. According to reports, GPT-5.6 received approval for public release after the U.S. Department of Commerce lifted the embargo imposed during its national security review. The model will be available in three versions: Sol, Terra, and Luna.

GPT-Live will be made available to developers through OpenAI’s API after the consumer rollout. Developers can register for access to the new models.
