WhatsApp’s New Security Features to Protect Users
WhatsApp continues to strive to improve the security of its users by launching several new features aimed at detecting and preventing fraudulent acts. With an additional layer of security, this messaging application utilizes machine learning technology to identify and block fraudulent accounts en masse.
One of the features introduced is context cards. This feature helps users understand the actual situation when receiving a message or group invitation. Apart from that, WhatsApp also makes it easier for users to block and report suspicious messages. This gives users more control over the interactions they receive.
Additional Features to Improve Security
Apart from that, WhatsApp also added a feature to stop unknown callers. Users can now directly choose not to receive calls from foreign numbers without having to answer. Additionally, privacy settings have been improved to give users full control over who can add them to groups.
Users will receive security notifications when placed in suspicious groups by people outside their contact list. Important information about the group will be displayed, along with tips for staying safe. If users feel uncomfortable, they can immediately leave the group without needing to open a conversation. However, if you want to get further context, users can open the conversation.
Notifications will be automatically muted until the user chooses to remain in the group. This ensures that users are not distracted by irrelevant notifications.
Protection from Interactions on Other Platforms
Scammers often start interactions on other platforms before directing users to continue the conversation privately, such as via WhatsApp. To protect users from this, WhatsApp presents a warning when a user sends a message to someone who is not in their contact list. This warning includes additional information about the sender so that users are more alert before continuing the conversation.
Fraudulent Account Arrest Results
In the first six months of this year, WhatsApp and Meta security teams managed to identify and block more than 6.8 million accounts connected to fraud centers run by organized crime networks. This proactive step was taken thanks to the results of internal investigations and collaboration with law enforcement.
“We continue to strive to eradicate fraud centers which often involve forced labor practices and are run by organized crime networks, especially in the Southeast Asia region,” said WhatsApp.

WhatsApp advises users to always be careful and reconsider before responding to suspicious messages. Especially if the message comes from an unknown number and offers money for a short time. With high awareness, users can protect themselves from increasingly sophisticated fraudulent acts.
