Microsoft Introduces Mico Digital Assistant, AI Version of Clippy
Mico introduction, a new avatar from Microsoft Copilot
Technology company Microsoft recently launched Mico as part of a new feature called Copilot. The launch was held in a special event held on Thursday (23/10/2025) United States time. Mico is a visual character who is the avatar of the artificial intelligence chatbot (AI) Microsoft Copilot. The name Mico is taken from the combination of the initial words of Microsoft Copilot, namely “MI” and “CO”.
According to the information provided by Microsoft, Mico is designed with a “warm” visual display and can be customized. This character will appear when the user interacts with the copilot, especially in voice mode. According to Microsoft’s explanation, Mico will listen, react, and even change color to reflect user interaction.
Mico is also claimed to be able to react in real-time. For example, when the user is sad or happy, Mico will display an expression according to the user’s mood. This makes the interaction between users and Mico more interactive and personal.
This Mico concept has something in common with Clippy, a Microsoft Office assistant who was popular in 1997. Microsoft seems to want to revive Clippy via Mico. In some cases, Mico will display the Clippy icon if its avatar is tapped several times, as shared by users on social media threads.
Mico’s special functions and modes
Mico is enabled by default in Copilot sound mode, but users can disable it if desired. In addition, Microsoft provides a Learn Live mode for Mico. When this mode is run, Mico will turn into a tutor, complete with glasses. In this mode, Mico can guide users to understand various topics, such as through visual cues, interactive whiteboards, and others. Not only providing instant answers, Mico can also help users in the learning process.
This Learn Live mode is intended specifically for users such as students who are practicing for the final exam, or users who are learning a new language and other materials. With this mode, Mico is not only an ordinary assistant, but also an effective learning aid.
Mico’s initial accessibility
In the early stages, Mico is available to users in the United States, Canada, and the UK through the desktop and mobile versions of the Copilot application. However, Microsoft has not detailed when Mico’s character will be expanded to other countries, including Indonesia.
Mico’s Purpose in Copilot Identity
Mico was released as Microsoft’s attempt to give identity to its AI assistant, Copilot. This idea was conveyed by Microsoft’s AI CEO, Mustafa Suleyman, in July 2025. According to Suleyman, Copilot will have some kind of permanent identity, an existence, and will have a living and aging space.
In addition, Mico is also presented to encourage users to interact more with their computers/laptops. Microsoft is aggressively referring to the latest Windows 11-powered PC as “a computer you can talk to”. With Mico, Microsoft hopes that users will feel closer and more comfortable when using this AI technology.
