3 Ways to Reduce Electricity Bills from Using the Refrigerator

Function and Importance of the Refrigerator in Daily Life

The refrigerator has now become an electronic device that is almost certainly present in every home. Apart from functioning to cool drinks, the refrigerator also helps keep food fresh so that it lasts a long time. Its existence makes daily activities very easy, from storing kitchen ingredients to preparing food supplies for the next few days.

However, unwise use of the refrigerator can result in increased electricity bills. Therefore, it is important for users to know how to save electricity when using a refrigerator. Here are some tips that can be applied.

Avoid opening and closing the refrigerator too often

One simple way to save electricity is to not open and close the refrigerator door too often. According to Toto Sukisno, lecturer in the Electrical Engineering Study Program from Yogyakarta State University (FT UNY), this habit makes the compressor, which is the main cooling component in the refrigerator, work harder.

Every time the refrigerator door is opened, cold air comes out and the compressor must work to stabilize the temperature again. This process requires greater energy. By reducing the frequency of opening the refrigerator door, users can reduce electricity consumption significantly.

Choosing a Two Door Refrigerator

The choice of refrigerator type also influences the efficiency of energy use. Ir. Syarif Hidayat, lecturer at the School of Electrical and Informatics Engineering (STEI) ITB, suggests using a two-door refrigerator. This is because a two-door refrigerator allows users to only open one door as needed.

This way, the temperature in the other room is maintained and the refrigerator doesn’t work too often. This helps reduce energy waste due to unnecessary cooling.

Keep the contents of the refrigerator from being too full

Apart from the frequency of opening the door, the contents of the refrigerator also affect electricity consumption. Syarif explained that a refrigerator that is too full can disrupt the circulation of cold air in it. The cooling distributed by the small fan cannot reach all parts of the refrigerator, so the engine workload increases.

To maintain even cooling distribution, you should leave enough space in the refrigerator. If it is too full, air circulation will be disrupted and energy consumption will be greater.

Basic Principles of Saving Electricity when Using a Refrigerator

In general, the principle of saving electricity when using a refrigerator is to use it wisely. Be it the capacity or power of the refrigerator, if used properly, electricity consumption can be more efficient.

Several steps, such as avoiding opening the door too often, choosing a double-door refrigerator, and keeping the contents of the refrigerator from being too full, can be effective solutions. By implementing these tips, users not only save electricity, but also maintain optimal refrigerator performance.
