3 Things to Avoid Cleaning with a Vacuum Cleaner

The Importance of Safety When Using a Vacuum Cleaner

A vacuum cleaner or vacuum cleaner is a very important tool in cleaning the house. This tool makes it easy to remove dust and dirt from various surfaces. However, even though it is an electronic device, care needs to be taken to ensure that it does not cause damage to the device or danger to the user.

Ratih Nadiah, Head Product Marketing of Living Home Appliance Solution at LG Electronics Indonesia, explained that vacuum cleaners are designed to absorb dust, both large and small, from various types of surfaces. “This type of dust and surface can be adjusted with tools or a vacuum cleaner head,” he said at the launch of the LG CordZero A9T All-in-One Tower™?Handstick Vacuum Cleaner at Habitate Resto, Kuningan, Monday (25/8/2025).

However, Ratih also warned that not all objects can be cleaned with a vacuum cleaner. For example, dry vacuum cleaners are only designed to clean dry dust and dirt as well as pet hair and fur. Using a vacuum cleaner to suck up things outside of this, such as liquids or water stains and sauce stains, can make the equipment not work optimally, and even damage the equipment.

According to Ratih, the filtration in a vacuum cleaner for dust particles has a different type of motor so it is not recommended to use a vacuum cleaner to suck up wet particles. In some sources, it is stated that ordinary vacuum cleaners are designed to clean dry dirt and can be seriously damaged if they try to suck up liquids. Water can damage motors, filters, and other electrical components.

Objects that Should Not be Vacuumed with a Vacuum Cleaner

Apart from liquids, a vacuum cleaner should also not be used to suck up wet dirt, such as wet cereal, because it can clog the hose and other parts of the vacuum cleaner. Burning or smoking objects should also not be cleaned with a vacuum cleaner. The damage it can cause is multiple, namely burning the paper bag or canvas of the vacuum cleaner and melting the vacuum cleaner tube.

Chris Kobrick, Director of Product Management at Kenmore, explains that other objects that have been sucked into the vacuum cleaner can also mix with these burning objects and catch fire. The key is not to rush. Rather than immediately vacuuming up burning or smoldering material, extinguish it completely first before attempting to clean it.

Small and sharp objects such as broken glass, nails, pins, needles, paper clips and small hard toys should also not be sucked up with a vacuum cleaner. Sharp objects have the potential to damage or cut the brush roll, hose, and vacuum housing. If the vacuum cleaner has a bag, these objects can also tear the paper or cloth bag inside so that sharp objects and other materials that have been sucked up come out of the bag and into other parts of the vacuum cleaner.

As a solution, clean small and sharp objects using a broom and dustpan. It is recommended to wear equipment, such as gloves and protective glasses, when cleaning these items.
