AI Linked to Employee Performance Reviews

Amazon’s Internal AI Tracking System
Amazon has developed an internal system called “Clarity” to monitor how frequently its employees use AI tools, according to a report by U.S. media outlet The Information. This system allows managers to track which AI tools employees are using, how often they engage with Amazon’s in-house AI tool “Kiro,” and other related metrics. The data collected from this system is reportedly being used for employee promotions and performance evaluations.
For instance, employees in the supply chain optimization technology team have been asked questions such as “How did you utilize AI to enhance operational efficiency and effectiveness” during their evaluations. Additionally, managers are required to provide specific examples of how AI was used to improve capabilities and drive innovation without affecting staffing levels. The Information mentioned that this evaluation process has been extended to all employees with potential for promotion since July of last year.
AI Use Reflected in Performance Evaluations
Many companies are now analyzing how extensively and effectively employees use AI tools and incorporating this into their performance evaluations. It is no longer just about encouraging AI usage but also about pressuring employees to demonstrate their ability to leverage AI in their work. However, as major companies continue to implement large-scale layoffs driven by AI, there is growing resistance against these personnel policies.
Meta’s AI Evaluation Tool
Meta plans to introduce an employee evaluation tool called “Checkpoint” in the middle of this year to assess employees’ AI usage. The amount of code generated using AI and the level of productivity improvement will be quantified and evaluated. In November of last year, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg stated, “Performance evaluations will increasingly be linked to AI adoption,” adding, “Employees who demonstrate AI-based achievements will receive higher rewards.” According to this policy, the top 20% performers will receive 200% of the base bonus, while a small number of top-tier performers will be given a 300% bonus along with the “Meta Award.”
Microsoft’s AI Encouragement
Microsoft is strongly promoting the use of its AI tool Copilot internally and tracking its usage rate not only among engineers but also across departments such as sales, marketing, and HR. Earlier, NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang criticized some managers for allegedly advising employees to reduce AI usage during an internal meeting, exclaiming, “Are you out of your mind?” He added, “We want to automate all tasks possible with AI,” emphasizing the company’s strong encouragement of AI tool usage.
Broader Industry Trends
The practice of reflecting AI usage in evaluations is not limited to tech companies. According to the Financial Times (FT), consulting firm Accenture recently announced that the use of AI tools will be a factor in evaluating senior employees for promotions. The company reportedly sent an email to employees stating, “Using core AI tools will be a key factor in personnel discussions.” Other companies, including the world’s largest music streaming platform Spotify and education platform Duolingo, are also assessing employees’ AI performance.
AI Proficiency in Hiring
AI proficiency has also become a critical factor in hiring new employees. According to The Guardian and other sources, consulting firm McKinsey has piloted an evaluation using its in-house AI tool “Lily” in new hire interviews. Candidates are tasked with solving problems by asking questions to the AI, reviewing, evaluating, and revising the AI-generated answers. The goal is to assess how well candidates identify errors or limitations in the AI’s responses and to hire those who proactively utilize AI.
Employee Backlash
However, The Information reported that such AI performance evaluations are also causing dissatisfaction among employees. Due to significant investments in AI and the productivity gains achieved through AI adoption, many companies are not hiring new employees or undergoing restructuring. For example, Amazon laid off 30,000 employees starting in the second half of last year. This has raised concerns in the tech industry that pressuring AI usage could ultimately lead to further workforce reductions.
