Backup WhatsApp will take Google Drive storage space

SFor five years, WhatsApp users for Android have been able to keep a backup of chats, including pictures and videos, on Google Drive for free, different from iPhone owners – WhatsApp on Android doesn’t take up Google storage space available there. However, today, Google and WhatsApp announced that starting December, all WhatsApp backup storage will take up Google’s storage space and count as part of their Google Drive storage usage.
important change
This change will affect WhatsApp beta users first and will be applied to all WhatsApp users in mid-2024. This messaging application promises to notify users 30 days before the change affects them personally. Notifications will appear as a banner in the Settings -> Chat -> Chat Backup section.
Options for users
Users who don’t want to use a Google account for backup still have the option to transfer their chat history to a new smartphone using the WhatsApp chat transfer feature. For this function to work, simply enable Wi-Fi on both devices; Internet connection is not required.
Clarification from Google
Google explained that there will be no fundamental changes to WhatsApp backups other than possible storage limits, meaning that the size of the WhatsApp chat backup can reduce the cloud storage space available to Google Drive users. When you delete data on WhatsApp, it is automatically deleted from your cloud backup, freeing up space in Google Drive.
Google Offer For Whatsapp Backup
To increase cloud storage, the company offers the use of Google One subscriptions. To “conjure it,” Google pledged “One-time Google One promotion for a number of eligible users.”
Free Google Drive Capacity for Whatapp Backup
It should be noted that similar conditions always apply to WhatsApp users on iOS, except that Apple still only offers 5 GB of cloud storage in its free plan.
WhatsApp backup cover
With this announcement, WhatsApp users should start considering their storage options. Whether we’re going to like this change or not, one thing is for sure: The Era of Unlimited Chat in the Cloud will probably see new constraints.
