Electric cars are increasingly becoming the main choice for people who want to reduce their dependence on fuel oil. Power outages that have occurred in a number of areas on the island of Java in the last few days have become a public concern, including electric car users who rely on charging at home. PT PLN (Persero) acknowledged that there were operational technical problems and disruptions to two large generating units that caused a decrease in the ability of electricity supply in the Java electricity system.

For owners of electric cars, this condition certainly needs to be a concern. Most electric vehicle users charge at home using home charging. If the power goes out during the charging process, the charging will automatically stop. Although generally the safety system on electric cars and chargers is designed to deal with these conditions, vehicle owners still need to anticipate that the car usage schedule is not disrupted.

Especially if the vehicle battery is in low condition and the car will be used for long trips or daily activities the next day. A power outage that lasts for several hours can make the battery charging process not complete as planned. It is known, the EV battery has a certain charging cycle limit, generally around 3,000 to 5,000 times charging. “The battery has a cycle age, around 3,000-5,000 charging. So it can reduce the life of the battery cycle, but the electricity goes out, it’s rare,” said Gadjah Mada University (UGM) Mechanical Engineering lecturer, Jayan Sentanuhady.

Therefore, knowing in advance the information on power outages can help electric car owners arrange charging schedules. If there is network maintenance or potential blackouts in the residential area, charging can be done earlier or look for alternative public electric vehicle charging stations (SPKLU).

PLN provides digital services through the PLN Mobile application to make it easier for customers to obtain information on disturbances and power outages. Through the “Check Off Around Me” feature, customers can find out the electrical conditions in the area of residence without having to contact customer service.

Steps to Check Power Outages

• Download and open the PLN Mobile application on mobile.
• Login using the registered mobile number.
• On the main page, select the Complaints menu. Click the Check Off feature around me.
• Enter or select Customer ID or meter number.
• Wait a few moments until the system displays the information.
• After that, the system will display a digital map along with information on electrical conditions around the customer’s location.

This information can be used by electric car users to plan vehicle charging. By knowing the network maintenance or potential blackouts, vehicle owners can avoid charging at risk of being disturbed. In addition, users also have time to look for alternative charging at the nearest SPKLU if the vehicle needs additional power to support daily mobility.
