iOS 27 Beta Reveals iPhone with Dual Batteries
Apple is preparing to unveil what could be its most groundbreaking iPhone to date. Recent discoveries in the latest iOS 27 developer beta have sparked widespread speculation about a long-rumored foldable device, which is expected to launch as the iPhone Ultra this September.
One of the most significant clues comes from the Battery Health section within the Settings app. Apple has introduced new wording that refers to “batteries” in the plural, a notable shift from the traditional singular “battery” language used across all current iPhones. Users will now see phrases such as “The batteries in this iPhone are performing as expected,” “The health of the batteries in this iPhone has significantly degraded,” and even a warning about “one of the batteries” not being an authentic Apple part.
This change in terminology strongly suggests that Apple is developing software support for a device with two separate battery cells. This setup is common in foldable phones, as it helps manage the weight distribution around the hinge mechanism.
What we know about the batteries
According to supply chain leaks reported by Digital Chat Station, the iPhone Ultra may feature two battery cells: one with a capacity of 1,921 mAh and another at 2,962 mAh, resulting in a combined total of 4,883 mAh. While this falls slightly short of earlier rumors suggesting a massive 5,400–5,800 mAh battery, it would still surpass Samsung’s latest Galaxy Z Fold 8 (Wide), which features a 4,800 mAh battery.
In terms of display technology, reports suggest the iPhone Ultra could include a large 7.76-inch inner screen and a 5.49-inch cover display. The camera setup is expected to include a 48 MP main sensor and a 48 MP ultra-wide lens. However, it appears there may not be a telephoto lens due to space constraints on the foldable design.
This battery discovery aligns with previous mentions in iOS 27 code regarding fold states, multiple displays, and multitasking features tailored for a larger, foldable screen. Apple reportedly has production elements moving forward after resolving hinge-related issues.
If everything comes together, the iPhone Ultra could mark a major shift for Apple users. While it is likely to carry a premium price tag—rumored to be between $2,000 and $2,500—Apple’s seamless hardware-software integration could result in one of the most refined foldable experiences available.
