Learning and speaking multiple languages may offer significant cognitive benefits, particularly in terms of brain health. Recent research suggests that individuals who are multilingual may experience a delay in brain aging by up to 13 years. This finding highlights the potential of language learning as a tool for maintaining mental sharpness and resilience as people grow older.

The study, which was presented at the Federation of European Neuroscience Societies conference in Barcelona, explored how multilingualism affects brain structure and function. Researchers found that individuals who spoke more than one language showed signs of younger brains compared to those who only spoke one language. Specifically, those who spoke two languages had brains that appeared about six years younger, while those who spoke three languages had brains that looked seven years younger. For individuals who spoke four languages, the difference was even more pronounced—up to 13 years younger.

This effect is believed to be related to the way the brain processes and manages multiple languages. The brain’s neural networks become more efficient when dealing with different linguistic systems, leading to enhanced connectivity and cognitive flexibility. As people age, these connections often weaken, resulting in declines in memory and processing speed. However, the study indicates that multilingual individuals may maintain better connectivity, which could help preserve cognitive function.

How the Study Was Conducted

To assess the impact of language on brain aging, scientists from Spain, Chile, Argentina, and Dublin conducted a comprehensive study involving 728 participants. They used magnetoencephalography (MEG) to measure brain activity and then applied artificial intelligence to analyze the data. This allowed researchers to determine the typical level of brain connectivity for a given age.

A second group of 144 individuals was also scanned, with an equal distribution of people who spoke one, two, three, or four languages. By comparing these groups, the researchers were able to identify patterns in brain aging associated with multilingualism.

Dr. Lucia Amoruso, a researcher at the Basque Center on Cognition, Brain and Language in San Sebastián, emphasized that the findings go beyond simply being bilingual. “The effect was not only related to the number of languages spoken,” she explained. “Higher language proficiency and earlier acquisition of a second language were also associated with more delayed brain aging. This suggests that multilingual experience matters as a gradient: it is not simply about being bilingual or not, but about the depth and duration of language experience.”

Considerations and Limitations

While the study provides compelling evidence, the researchers acknowledged that other factors could influence brain aging. These include lifestyle choices, social engagement, and access to educational and cultural opportunities. Although they accounted for variables such as age, sex, and education, they noted that further research is needed to fully understand the complex relationship between language and brain health.

Experts in the field have responded to the findings with both enthusiasm and caution. Prof. Christina Dalla, a neuroscientist from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, praised the study’s implications. “This study suggests that learning a second, third, or fourth language could help our brains stay younger for longer,” she said. “The earlier we start, the better. There are many good reasons for learning another language at any age—social, cultural, and for the health of your brain—so we should support language-learning at school and throughout life, even if it’s hard.”

However, Eef Hogervorst, a professor of biological psychology at Loughborough University, urged a more cautious interpretation. While acknowledging the link between multilingualism and brain resilience, she pointed out that other factors might play a role. “It may be the case that people who speak multiple languages also engage in healthier lifestyles and/or have better access to other protective environments and activities, such as reading, lifelong learning, and playing musical instruments,” she said.
