Meta Issues IDR 4 Trillion to Recruit Great Youth AI, Who Is He?

Recruitment Matt Deitke by META: Fantastic Offer for Artificial Intelligence

META, the world’s leading technology company, has again shown its commitment to developing artificial intelligence (AI) by recruiting Matt Deitke, a 24-year-old young researcher who is considered one of the best talents in the AI field. Deitke has reportedly received a very large contract, which is around 250 million US dollars, equivalent to Rp. 4 trillion. This figure reflects the magnitude of the value given by the meta to Deitke.

Previously, Deitke rejected the initial offer from Zuckerberg, which was worth around 125 million US dollars or around Rp. 2 trillion over four years. However, Zuckerberg’s interest in Deitke made him decide to meet in person and increase the job offer. With a potential payment of up to 100 million US dollars or around Rp. 1.6 trillion in the first year, Deitke finally accepted the offer, which may be the biggest salary package in meta history.

Comments from Professor David Autor, economist at MIT, said that this suggests that computer scientists are now being paid like professional athletes, a phenomenon that marks the culmination of revenge against the “nerds” in the past.

Deitke’s background and contribution

Matt Deitke has just left the computer science doctoral program at the University of Washington. After leaving his doctoral program, he worked at the Allen Institute for Artificial Intelligence in Seattle, USA, where he led the development of Molmo. Molmo is an AI-based chatbot capable of processing various types of data, including images, sound, and text. This platform has similarities with the multimodal system that is being developed by Meta today.

Deitke also co-founded Vercept, a startup that focuses on AI agents who can perform tasks independently using internet-based software. The company managed to collect 16.5 million US dollars or around Rp. 270 billion from investors, including former Google CEO, Eric Schmidt.

recognition and achievement

Deitke’s innovative work in 3D datasets, AI environments, and multimodal models gives it wide recognition. One of them is the Extraordinary Paper Award at Neurips 2022, which is the highest award in the AI research community.

Deitke recruitment by META shows the company’s aggressive efforts in competing in the field of artificial intelligence. In addition, META has reportedly paid more than 1 billion US dollars to build a list of AI researchers. An example is Ruoming Pang, the former head of Apple’s AI capital team, who joined the Superintelligence Labs team with a compensation package worth more than 200 million US dollars.

Concerns about economic inequality

However, this massive meta project sparked concern about economic inequality in the era of AI dominance. Ramesh Srinivasan, Professor of Information and Design Studies/Media Arts at UCLA, stated that the AI development model by companies such as META is the main cause of widening inequality.

According to Srinivasan, these companies gave hundreds of millions of US dollars to some elite researchers, while at the same time, they laid off thousands of workers, including content moderators who were often not classified as full-time employees. He emphasized that these jobs wanted to be replaced by AI systems that were being aggressively developed by Meta and similar companies.

Zuckerberg’s commitment to the elite team

Zuckerberg told his investors that he was building an elite and talented team. According to him, by spending hundreds of billions of US dollars on computing and building a cluster with a capacity of Gigawatt, it is reasonable to compete very tightly and do anything to get it.
