Warning Against Digital Fraud Ahead of THR
In the midst of Eid, especially before the disbursement of Hari Raya Allowances (THR), the public is advised to be more alert to various types of digital fraud. This was conveyed by Niki Luhur, Founder & Group CEO of VIDA, who highlighted the high risk of fraud during this period.
According to data obtained by VIDA throughout 2025, there was a spike in digital fraud cases, the most significant of which occurred before and during THR disbursement. This momentum is marked by increased transaction activity and community mobility, which indirectly creates opportunities for digital criminals to carry out their actions.
“Fraud always adapts. Every time the defense system is strengthened, the perpetrators retest it, adjust their techniques, and return with more complex and systematic methods. They take advantage of security gaps, weaknesses in people’s digital literacy, and certain momentum to carry out their actions,” said Niki in his statement.
Fraud Modes to Be Aware of
Niki mentioned at least two modes of fraud that need to be watched out for before THR. The first is phishing or smishing. This method involves various ways to lure victims to click on links and enter personal data such as username, password, and One-Time Password (OTP) via SMS.
For example, perpetrators can impersonate logistics agencies or provide fake Ramadan promo offers via unknown numbers. This method also developed through the fake BTS method which was popular several years ago and was discovered by the government. With this method, fake messages can be sent en masse and appear to come from official institutions, making them appear convincing to the recipient.
The second mode is malware. This fraud lures victims to download malicious applications in the form of APK files. The modes that are often used include sending documents as if they are important documents such as package delivery status documents, wedding invitations, or other documents that appear relevant to the victim. If you are not observant, once downloaded, the application can be automatically installed on the victim’s device and allow the perpetrator to monitor the device remotely, including accessing passwords and sensitive information stored or used on the device.
Safeguards That Must Be Taken
These two fraud modes have a similar pattern, namely attempting to gain access to user passwords or credentials. This shows that passwords alone are no longer sufficient as a security bulwark in an increasingly complex digital era.
To prevent this fraud from ensnaring the public in the lead up to Eid this year, Niki suggests protecting two aspects, namely the device owned and biometric identity. The two are closely related because the devices owned refer to smartphones, tablets or laptops which may store digital identity access which is important as a gateway to crucial services such as financial services.

VIDA is also encouraging a movement called #Don’tJustClick so that people at important moments before THR disbursement can be more careful when receiving digital messages. People should not just click on links, download applications, or share personal information so as not to get caught in these fraudulent methods.
