Online Zakat Fitrah: Legal Laws and Conditions According to Ulama

Changes in Zakat Payment Methods in the Digital Era
Zakat fitrah is a religious obligation that must be carried out by every Muslim, especially in the month of Ramadan leading up to Eid al-Fitr. This worship aims to purify oneself and at the same time help others in need so they can celebrate Eid properly. Zakat fitrah is usually issued in the form of staple foods such as rice or money whose value is adjusted to the price of the food.
In recent years, developments in digital technology have changed the way Muslims pay zakat. Now, zakat payments can be made via bank transfer, application, or digital platform provided by zakat amil institutions. Even though this method offers easy access, many people still question the validity of their worship because there is no physical meeting between the giver (muzakki) and the recipient (mustahik).
Principles of the Validity of Zakat
According to Islamic law, the validity of zakat is determined by the fulfillment of the pillars and conditions, not by the method of payment. The important things are the intention when paying zakat, the assets issued according to the provisions, and the distribution of zakat to people who are entitled to receive it. Therefore, the use of digital systems such as bank transfers or applications does not affect the validity of zakat as long as the funds are actually distributed to the mustahik before the specified time limit, namely before the Eid prayer.
Paying zakat through digital services is also a form of handing over a trust to another party to distribute zakat. In Islamic jurisprudence, this practice is known as a wakalah or representative contract. This means that someone who pays zakat entrusts the zakat amil institution to distribute the funds to zakat recipients. As long as the institution carries out its duties honestly and in accordance with sharia rules, this method is permissible in Islam.
Views of Ulama and Related Institutions
The scholars explained that changing the method of payment does not change the basic law of zakat. Technological developments only present new methods for distributing zakat, but do not affect the main principles. The most important thing is to ensure that the zakat actually reaches those who are entitled to receive it.
Several fatwa institutions and contemporary ulama state that zakat fitrah paid via a digital system is permitted. Technology is considered a tool or means that makes it easier for Muslims to fulfill their zakat obligations. The Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) also explained that online zakat payments can be considered valid as long as the transaction process is carried out clearly, is trustworthy, and zakat funds are not misused or mixed with other funds.
In zakat jurisprudence, the principle that zakat must be distributed to people who are truly entitled to receive it remains valid, whether zakat is handed over directly or through a digital system. Several scholars also emphasized the importance of the process of receiving zakat by the amil. In the context of online zakat, this process occurs when the zakat funds have been received by the zakat institution through their official account.
The Importance of Institutional Transparency and Clarity
Clarity of zakat management institutions and transparency of distribution are very important in the online zakat payment system. With a good management system, paying zakat via application or bank transfer can help expand the reach of zakat distribution to people in need.
