Hybrid cars are designed as an intelligent combination of internal combustion engine and battery technology to achieve maximum fuel efficiency. The risk of damage to a hybrid car often arises from neglecting small details that have a big impact on the health of the traction battery and power control unit. Components such as nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) or lithium-ion batteries have chemical characteristics that are very sensitive to extreme charging and application patterns. This article will dissect three fatal habits that drivers often engage in and how they impact the longevity of this environmentally friendly vehicle technology.

1. Bad Impact of Sudden Acceleration or Kick Down Technique



Habit of doing kick down or pressing the accelerator pedal deeply and suddenly to gain instant speed is one of the heaviest burdens on the hybrid system. When the gas pedal is pressed, the vehicle’s computer system is forced to suddenly draw a large amount of electric current from the battery to the electric motor, while simultaneously starting the gasoline engine at high RPM. This massive surge in electric current produces excess heat (heat stress) in battery cells and inverter components which are responsible for managing power.

When the car is not in use, the hybrid battery will experience a natural discharge process or self-discharge. If this process goes on for weeks without any charging cycles from the engine or regenerative braking, the battery cells risk becoming unbalanced and losing their ability to store an optimal charge.

Apart from battery problems, rarely using a hybrid car can also cause rust on the brake discs because the regenerative braking system does not work to remove oxidation residue. Electronic components that rarely receive electricity are also susceptible to moisture which can trigger corrosion in high voltage cable connectors or sockets.
