Signs of damage to the alternator that must be known

the role of the alternator in the car electrical system
In the car’s electrical system, the alternator plays an important role as a source of electric current supply. This component is responsible for keeping the vehicle’s electricity stable and functioning properly. Without an alternator that works optimally, the entire car’s electrical system can experience problems.
Jajang Setiawan, an alternator specialist workshop technician at Anugrah Putra Tasik, Cinere, Depok, explained that the alternator not only supplies power to the battery, but is also the main component in maintaining the smooth operation of the vehicle. “If there is a problem with the alternator, automatically all electricity will not function,” he said.
Signs of alternator damage
Damage to the alternator is often marked by the battery indicator light on the instrument panel. However, Ujang, Jajang Setiawan’s nickname, added that these signs are not always clear. “It could be that the problem comes from the battery itself. Or, the current model is a digital model. There is a low charger that appears,” he explained.
According to Ujang, these indicators sometimes only appear at the beginning. When the car is gassed, the battery indicator light can turn off. “But, it could be when driving, suddenly the electricity drops, and there is no indication of a signal indicating that the alternator has a problem,” he added.
common causes of alternator damage
The causes of alternator damage may vary. Ujang explained that some common causes include:
- Broken or disconnected current cable
- A slack head of battery
- Damaged internal components of the alternator
These problems can cause unstable electricity, thus disrupting the performance of the entire car’s electrical system.
Impact of Alternator Damage
If the alternator is damaged, the impact will be directly felt by the battery. Ujang explained that the battery serves to accommodate power. If the power received is exhausted and there is no charging, the battery has the potential to become soak or overdrawn. “Even though it is replaced with a new one, if the alternator has a problem, then automatically the power in the battery will run out as well,” he said.
Therefore, Ujang suggested that vehicle owners perform alternator services on a regular basis. Ideally, the service is carried out based on an odometer or every six months. “For the service, the alternator must be opened and cleaned. Then, check one by one. If there are weak components, it needs to be replaced,” said Ujang.
the importance of caring for the alternator
By caring for and paying attention to the performance of the alternator, car owners can ensure that the vehicle’s electrical system remains in optimal condition. This helps reduce the risk of more severe damage and maintains driving comfort.
Routine maintenance not only extends the life of the alternator, but also maintains a balance between the battery and other components in the car’s electrical system. Thus, vehicle owners can be more calm and confident when driving.
