BI Improves Digital Economy, Pays QRIS in South Korea

Introduction to QRIS Cross Border Indonesia-South Korea
Bank Indonesia (BI) has officially launched the use of cross-border Quick Response Code Indonesian Standard (QRIS) to South Korea on April 1, 2026. With this launch, Indonesians can now use QRIS services in five countries, namely Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Japan, and South Korea (South Korea). This marks an important step in expanding the integrated digital payment network between countries.
BI Governor Perry Warjiyo said that this event reflects a shared vision of an integrated, efficient, and inclusive payment ecosystem. He explained that now people in both countries can make cross-border transactions through the domestic QR application, so that payments become faster, easier, cheaper, and more reliable.
“In the future, we aim to deepen this cooperation further by expanding participation, increasing interoperability, and improving user experience. Together, we not only link payments, but also connect people, businesses, and cross-border opportunities,” Perry said.
Solid and fast cooperation
BI Deputy Governor Filianingsih Hendarta said that the implementation of the QRIS Cross Border between Indonesia and South Korea was the result of solid cooperation with various parties in both countries. This process starts from the design, development, to implementation stages which was carried out on April 1, 2026. According to him, this collaboration is considered the fastest compared to the implementation of the QRIS Cross Border with the previous countries.
“QRIS with Korea is the fastest among others, less than a year. This close collaboration ensures that the innovations we build are not only conceptually strong but also ready to be used to provide real benefits,” said Fili.
He emphasized that the implementation of QRIS between countries between Indonesia and South Korea is a concrete step in realizing the 2030 Indonesian Payment System Blueprint Agenda (BSPI). This is a strategic step to encourage digital transformation that focuses not only on digitalization, but also on sovereignty, efficiency, and global connectivity.
benefits for the tourism sector and MSMEs
With the QRIS Cross Border, Indonesia can be more connected to a wider market globally. Fili emphasized that Indonesia can continue to strengthen its role in building efficient, inclusive, and oriented cross-border payment connectivity.
Furthermore, the data shows that the volume of inbound transactions (foreign people to Indonesia) has recorded 5.9 million transactions, while outbound transactions (Indonesian people to foreign countries) are 1.7 million. This achievement reflects that the QRIS between countries is a relevant solution needed by the community.
“We have embraced the Asian Plus Three, namely Japan, South Korea, and hopefully next month we and China will be able to connect too,” he added.

historic moments in digital financial cooperation
Deputy Head of Mission of the South Korean Embassy to Indonesia Park Soo-Deok said that the implementation of the QRIS Cross Border between Indonesia and South Korea was a historic moment that marked a new chapter in digital financial cooperation between the two countries. This QR-based cross-border payment system is not just a technological achievement, but is a real fruit of the cooperation that has been going on so far.
Soo-deok said that the launch of the QRIS Cross Border Indonesia-South Korea had a special meaning because it was carried out in conjunction with the visit of the President of the Republic of Indonesia Prabowo Subianto to South Korea. This proves that economic and financial cooperation between the two countries continues to grow closer.
“With the momentum of this state visit, the two countries are trying to improve bilateral relations that have been happening within the framework of the Special Strategic Partnership towards a Special Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, a more in-depth and comprehensive framework of cooperation,” he explained.
