Deepfake Scams Soar as Social Media Users Face New Threats
The internet is a vast space filled with promises, from schemes that claim to make users rich quickly, to dating apps that promise to find perfect partners in just a few clicks, and offers for dream holidays at unbeatable prices. However, these opportunities come with risks, especially as deepfakes become more advanced. The growing sophistication of deepfake technology has led to an alarming increase in online scams, resulting in significant financial losses.
According to a recent study by cybersecurity company SurfShark, deepfake-related scams and fraud schemes have cost people approximately $1.1 billion (€930 million) worldwide in 2025. This figure is three times higher than the roughly €304 million lost in 2024. The rise in deepfake scams highlights a worrying trend in digital security, where scammers are leveraging technology to deceive people on an unprecedented scale.
More than 80% of these losses occurred on social media platforms, with Facebook, WhatsApp, and Telegram being the most targeted. These platforms provide scammers with access to large user bases, making them ideal for spreading deceptive content. The most profitable deepfake scams involved video and audio elements, often impersonating well-known figures such as celebrities, business leaders, and even politicians.
In 2025, European politicians were not spared from these tactics. For example, a deepfake video altered a speech made by Poland’s President Karol Nawrocki, making it appear as though he was promoting a fraudulent investment platform. Similarly, during the summer, a deepfake video spread across Germany, featuring Chancellor Friedrich Merz urging the public to sign up for an investment platform. This prompted consumer rights organizations to issue warnings about the dangers of fake videos.
Romance fraud is another growing concern. Scammers use realistic videos and audio to build fake romantic relationships with victims. Once they gain the trust of their targets, they often ask for money to cover supposedly urgent medical procedures. In some cases, they also trick victims into investing in fraudulent schemes.
In France, one woman’s story went viral in early 2025 after she revealed that she had been conned into believing she was in a relationship with Brad Pitt. In reality, she was the victim of a sophisticated scamming ring that convinced her that the Hollywood star was gravely ill and needed money for medical treatment. She ultimately handed over more than €800,000.
While romance scammers operate globally, certain regions have become hubs for these activities. West Africa, particularly Nigeria and Ghana, as well as Southeast Asia, including Cambodia, Myanmar, and the Philippines, are known for hosting large-scale scam operations.
Although romance scam losses are generally smaller compared to those from investment scams, highly targeted attacks can cause severe psychological damage to victims. The emotional toll of falling for a deepfake-based romance scam can be devastating, leaving individuals feeling betrayed, vulnerable, and financially ruined.
As deepfake technology continues to evolve, it is crucial for users to remain vigilant and informed. Cybersecurity experts recommend verifying the authenticity of online content, especially when it involves personal or financial information. With the right awareness and precautions, individuals can better protect themselves from the growing threat of deepfake scams.
