Sony Turns PlayStation Disc Factory into Optical Facility, the Era of Physical Games is Ending

Big Change at PlayStation Factory in Austria

Sony, one of the world’s leading technology companies, is taking a big step in its business transformation by turning the function of a PlayStation game disc production in Austria into a micro optical lens manufacturing facility. This step is part of the company’s strategy to gradually shift from the distribution of physical games to the digital ecosystem.

The factory owned by Sony Digital Audio Disc Corporation (DADC) located in Thalgau, Austria, will be converted through an investment of around 30 million euros or equivalent to Rp. 617 billion. Information about the change was conveyed to employees in early July, along with the announcement of the plan to stop the distribution of the PlayStation disc starting in January 2028.

So far, the Thalgau facility has become one of Sony’s largest optical media production centers with a capacity of around 600,000 discs every day. Half of the total production is used to meet the needs of PlayStation games in various markets.

However, along with the increasing trend of digital game purchases, Sony estimates the production of discs at the factory will shrink drastically to only about 10 percent of the current capacity in 2028.

Focus on optical technology

As a substitute, the factory will produce micro optical lenses that are used in various modern technology devices, ranging from camera sensors, augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR) devices, optical fiber networks, to medical equipment.

This change shows that Sony not only follows changes in consumer behavior, but also expands its business focus to the optical technology sector which has high growth prospects in various industries.

Employee Protection

Although the disc production line will be reduced significantly, Sony ensures that it will not terminate the 300 employees at the facility. The workers will actually receive training to support the optical component production process which is scheduled to start next year.

This step reflects the major changes in the global gaming industry that increasingly relies on digital distribution over physical media. Thus, Sony shows its commitment to continue to grow and adapt to market changes.

A New Era for PlayStation

The transformation also marked the end of one of the important eras in the history of PlayStation, where physical discs for decades became the main media distribution of games before being replaced by digital services.
