Why Your Garage Isn’t Safe for Electronics

After finishing a weekend decluttering session, you might find yourself with a pile of old tech gadgets that you’re unsure what to do with. It’s tempting to just put them back in their original boxes and store them in the garage. However, this approach can be disastrous for your electronics. Circuit boards, batteries, and other components are designed for climate-controlled environments, and the extreme temperature fluctuations in a garage can severely damage your devices.

During the summer months, a closed garage can become an oven-like environment. The intense heat can dry out thermal pastes that help keep processors cool or even warp plastic casings. In contrast, freezing winter temperatures can cause issues such as sluggish LCD displays or brittle plastic bezels that are prone to cracking. Additionally, the constant cycle of heating and cooling causes metal components inside your electronics to expand and contract, which can affect solder joints on circuit boards.

Moisture is another significant concern. Ambient humidity can lead to condensation settling inside your devices, particularly on motherboards. This condensation can cause corrosion on the tiny metallic pathways that your device relies on to function. Even if your gear appears fine on the outside, internal corrosion can result in a short circuit when you try to power it on.

The risks associated with storing tech in a garage don’t end there, especially when it comes to batteries. Most modern wireless electronics use lithium-ion batteries, found in smartphones, tablets, handheld gaming consoles, and even the best robot vacuums. These batteries have a volatile reputation when exposed to extreme temperatures.

When garage temperatures rise during a heatwave, the delicate chemical components of lithium-ion batteries begin to degrade rapidly. This heat can cause battery cells to struggle with holding and distributing charge. More alarmingly, prolonged exposure to high temperatures can cause batteries to swell, potentially cracking the device’s casing. In the worst cases, they may leak toxic fluids and pose a fire hazard. Similarly, deep freezes in the winter can kill the battery’s internal chemistry, leaving it completely dead by spring.

If you’re keeping unused tech gear, it’s essential to store it in a dry, climate-controlled area, such as your home or a storage center. Consider placing them in a dry hallway closet, tucking them into bins under a bed, or managing your tech clutter with a storage DIY project. Avoid unfinished basements, as they can cause similar corrosion issues as a garage. The best solution is to keep your unused tech in a temperature-controlled space so you can easily use it again years down the road.

Even if you manage to control the temperature and humidity in your garage, you’re still facing challenges from the environment itself. Garages are inherently dirty and high-traffic spaces. Every time you open the door, you invite in dust and exhaust particles. If you use the space as a workshop, sawdust is added to the mix. This dust attracts static electricity, which can work its way into USB ports and exhaust vents.

When you finally decide to bring an old console or PC tower back inside and plug it in, the dusty internals may struggle to function properly, leading to overheating or hardware failure. Dust isn’t the only issue; garages are also attractive to pests looking for a cozy place to hide. Mice are known for chewing through cords, while bugs like spiders enjoy nesting inside dark, enclosed spaces like receivers and computer towers. Powering up a device with critters inside can instantly fry both the uninvited guests and the device’s internal components.

By keeping your unused tech inside your house, you give them the chance to be used again years down the road.
