Ultra-thin silicon solar panel invented

Dapat digunakan untuk Penerbangan, Antariksa, dan Perangkat Elektronik Genggam

Silicon solar panels are currently still less flexible in their use. They are relatively thick and heavy, making it difficult to use in flight and have not been widely used in electronic wearables. It is also important for applications in space, because every kilogram orbited costs a lot. However, scientists from China and Australia have overcome this problem by creating flexible ultra-thin panels of familiar silicone.

The advantages of ultra-thin silicone solar panels

According to Professor Li Yang from Jiangsu University of Science and Technology (JUST), crystalline silicon solar cells, made from silicon wafers, have been and remain the most mature and widely used solutions to generate electrical energy. However, there are two main technological constraints faced.

One of the disadvantages of modern silicon solar panels is that the energy conversion efficiency of large silicon cells remains limited to 26%. Another constraint is the thickness of the elements, which usually range from 150 to 180 microns, making them difficult to use in applications that require more flexible and lighter materials, such as mounting on curved roofs, satellites, and space stations.

However, led by Professor Lee, a team of scientists from Just, Curtin University in Australia, and Longi Green Energy Technology have succeeded in creating a photopanel with a thickness of about 50 microns of crystalline silicon. It’s thinner than a regular sheet of A4 writing paper. This photo panel cannot be folded in half like a sheet of paper, but can be bent with an adequate level of flexibility without breaking.

What is more important is that the efficiency of this ultra-thin photopanel exceeds 26%. Scientists have created several more solar cells with a thickness of between 55 and 130 microns, and all have efficiency that exceeds 26%.

Professor Lee said that his team is trying to create crystalline silicon solar cells that are more flexible and efficient so that one day it can be used easily like a roll of film.

Implications and hopes for the future

This breakthrough has a major impact on various industries, especially in aviation, space technology, and wearable electronics. With a thinner and more flexible solar panel, the possibility of its use becomes more widespread and applicable.

In the aviation industry, lighter solar panels can help reduce aircraft weight and improve energy efficiency, which in turn can reduce emissions and operating costs.

In the field of space technology, flexible solar panels can be installed more easily on satellites and space stations, opening up new opportunities for more sophisticated and efficient space missions.

While in electronic wearable, the thin and flexible solar panel can be integrated into clothing and other wearable devices, allowing easier and more convenient charging wherever the user is.

Conclusion

The breakthrough in the development of this ultra-thin silicon solar panel promises a lot of potential in various fields of application. With increased efficiency and greater flexibility, these solar panels can open the door for new innovations and performance improvements in the aviation, space, and electronic wearable industries. By continuing to carry out further research and development, the future of solar energy seems brighter.
