After the iPhone X was launched, there were rumors that Apple would release the iPhone 9 in 2020. However, these rumors were not proven. Instead of that, Apple actually released the iPhone SE 2 series. The question is, why no iPhone 9?
Allegations of the absence of the iPhone 9
Apple has never made an official statement regarding the reason for the absence of the iPhone 9. However, many people relate this condition to Microsoft’s experience in naming the Windows operating system. Microsoft also did not release a series of operating systems called Windows 9. From Windows 7 and Windows 8, Microsoft immediately released Windows 10.
The reason Microsoft did not release Windows 9 was explained implicitly through the t-shirt worn by Joe Belfiore, Head of Windows at Microsoft. On the stage of the Microsoft Build developer conference, Belfiore uses a t-shirt with a binary code picture which when translated into “Windows 10, because 7 8 9”. The number 8 on the t-shirt is read “eight,” which is similar to the word “ate” (the past form of “eat”). So, literally, the reason why Windows 10 is direct is because Windows 8 “eats” Windows 9.
This marketing strategy is allegedly also used by Apple in the launch of the iPhone X. The goal is to show a big leap from the previous series. At that time, the iPhone X brought significant updates compared to the previous series. iPhone X Naming and Reason for Name Difference
iPhone X is not named as the iPhone 10 to keep the feelings of users buying the iPhone 8. Apple doesn’t want fans who buy the iPhone 8 to feel inferior when they see the iPhone 10 in the market. Therefore, the iPhone 10 is named the iPhone X. Imagine if Apple used the name iPhone 10. Apple fans may feel left out if they choose to buy an iPhone 8 which was released together with the iPhone 10.
Thus, the iPhone X is not the iPhone 10, but a special edition of the iPhone. Apple has a tradition of using the X symbol in products that they consider a product that changes or differs from the whole line.
