Google renamed FI VPN, Pixel users now have more integrated built-in VPN features
Google secretly renamed the VPN service on its mobile service, Google FI, to “VPN by Google.” For Pixel 7 and later users, this change is more than just rebranding—because they’re now being transferred to a more integrated built-in VPN service directly in the phone settings. This shift marks Google’s efforts to simplify its ecosystem while increasing user comfort.
Google FI VPN Now Named “VPN by Google”
According to a report from 9to5Google, Google has changed the name of the VPN service available to Google FI customers. A VPN formerly known as “Google FI VPN” is now officially named “VPN by Google.”
Google states that this is just a name change for brand consistency, without any technical or functional changes for most Android and iOS users. Users can still access this VPN through the FI Wireless companion application, which recently also received an interface update with the addition of the “Plan” tab at the bottom of the screen.
Pixel users can be treated differently
For users of Pixel devices—especially the Pixel 7 and later versions—this change has an additional impact. Instead of using a VPN from FI applications, they are now directed to a VPN service that is already integrated in the operating system: “VPN by Google.”
This built-in VPN feature was first introduced with the Pixel 8, and then expanded to all the Pixel-enabled devices, including the Pixel Tablet. Users will now see a notification in the FI application stating:
“VPN Controls Are Moving: Beginning May 22, VPN Controls are moving to settings.
Once the user enables this switching, the on/off VPN button in the FI application will disappear and be replaced with a shortcut to the “Manage VPN in Settings” menu. In addition to a cleaner display, this built-in VPN also gets updates directly from the Play Store and offers additional convenience Quick Settings Tile On Android, so that the VPN can be enabled or disabled with one touch.
