Komdigi Calls Google and Meta for Child Protection Violations
JAKARTA – The Ministry of Communication and Digital (Kemkomdigi) took decisive steps by calling two major technology companies, namely Google and Meta, to undergo an intensive examination. This step was taken after indications of non-compliance from the two companies in complying with child protection rules in the digital room.
This summons refers to Government Regulation Number 17 of 2025 concerning the Governance of the Implementation of Electronic Systems in Child Protection (PP Tunas). In this rule, every digital platform is required to ensure that users under the age of 16 cannot use the account freely.
META, which has services such as Facebook, Instagram, and Threads, as well as Google, is asked to account for their electronic system management (PSE) management system. The main focus of this call is to ensure that each platform is able to limit the access of underage users.
The Minister of Communication and Digital, Meutya Hafid, stated that this summons is a form of government firmness in maintaining the safety of children in the Indonesian digital ecosystem. He emphasized that the safety of children is non-negotiable.
“This summons is part of the law enforcement process that is measurable and according to procedure.
This legal step is carried out through several stages regulated in the Tunas PP. The process starts from monitoring, further examination, to the potential imposition of administrative sanctions that will be given in stages to the violating platform.
Meutya explained that his party was very careful in carrying out the process so that maladministration would not occur. Kemkomdigi ensures every law enforcement action against Google and Meta has a strong legal basis.
In addition to calling against Google and Meta, Kemkomdigi also reported that he had sent a warning letter to other platforms such as TikTok and Roblox. This is done so that these platforms immediately show full compliance according to their commitments.
On the other hand, the government gives appreciation to Platform X and Bigo Live. Both platforms are considered fast in implementing the age verification mechanism and deactivating user accounts under 16 years old.
“Our appreciation goes to the platform that is responsive and obedient. This shows that compliance is not a difficult thing if there is a commitment,” said Meutya.
