OpenAI Announces IDR 814.5 Billion Funds to Help Non-Profit Organizations

OpenAI launched a fund of IDR 814.5 billion to support non-profit organizations

OpenAI, a leading artificial intelligence company, announced the launch of US$50 million (equivalent to Rp814.5 billion) on Friday (18/7/2025). This fund aims to support non-profit organizations and communities in various sectors. The announcement was made in San Francisco, USA, as part of the company’s strategic steps in expanding the social impact through the use of artificial intelligence technology.

This program will involve various organizations in the US with a focus on education, health, and community economic empowerment. The goal is to provide real support to organizations that work directly in the field and often face limited resources.

non-profit commission that was formed and succeeded in collecting input

In April 2025, OpenAI established an independent non-profit commission to direct the company’s philanthropic assistance. This commission is in charge of conducting consultations with more than 500 non-profit organizations and community experts to identify the main needs and challenges faced in the field.

For three months, the commission held a series of hearings with various parties and recorded strategic recommendations related to community empowerment based on artificial intelligence. The final report of the commission was submitted to the OpenAI Board of Directors the day before the launch of this social fund.

“This commission was formed to ensure OpenAI’s philanthropic efforts can address long-term systemic issues,” the OpenAI statement said. The results of this consultation are the main reference for companies in supporting the Community Service Forecasting Organization.

Launch of IDR 814.5 billion as a follow-up to the Commission’s recommendations

The launch of US$50 million (Rp814.5 billion) is a follow-up to the recommendations of the commission report. These funds are designed to empower non-profit organizations and communities that have been directly involved in community service. This step also reflects OpenAI’s commitment to building collaboration between the private sector and the community.

“Openai responded to the commission’s recommendations by providing direct support to mission-based organizations that provide important services and often have limited resources,” the company said in a statement. As part of its implementation, OpenAI plans to partner with various organizations to expand its impact and innovation in education, economic opportunities, community organizations, and health.

This fund also supports research and community initiatives in the use of artificial intelligence for the welfare of the community.

Changes in the structure and commitment of the social mission OpenAI

OpenAI affirmed its organization’s restructuring efforts to ensure the continuity of the social mission amid the demands of large investments in the AI sector. The company is now focusing on turning the profit entity into a public benefit corporation, where the non-profit parent remains the majority shareholder.

This structural change was taken after hearing input from various community leaders and state authorities. “The decision to keep non-profits in control is taken after listening to stakeholders and discussions with state authorities,” said OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.

The move received widespread attention after OpenAI ensured in its official release that all collaborations and social funds were directed at accelerating the use of AI with inclusive principles and prioritizing community needs.
