OpenAI Launches Sora App for Android: Feed Similar to TikTok, Create AI Videos
Sora, an artificial intelligence-based video application from OpenAI, is now officially available for Android users in several countries such as the United States, Canada, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam. Previously, this application was launched first for iOS in September 2025 and immediately took the top position of the App Store charts. Sora recorded more than 1 million downloads within a week, according to the TechCrunch report. With the presence of the Android version on the Google Play Store, the download number is expected to increase even more rapidly.
The main features brought by the Android version of Sora are the same as the iOS version, including the popular feature of “CameOS”, which allows users to create their own videos in various activities, using face image as a digital model. This AI video can be shared through a TikTok-style feed, where users can find and interact with other users’ works. This strategy is considered as OpenAI’s move to strengthen its position in the competitive short video market, directly compete with META (through the AI Vibes video feed), as well as old giants such as TikTok and Instagram.
Despite being commercially successful, Sora could not be separated from the controversy regarding her deepfake abilities. After the initial launch, several users were known to upload inappropriate videos from historical figures, including Martin Luther King Jr. This case sparked widespread criticism until OpenAI temporarily stopped content creation with the figure of Dr. King and tighten its application security policy.
Another problem arises when the user starts making videos containing copyrighted characters, such as SpongeBob and Pikachu in the Pokemon series. To avoid legal disputes, OpenAI changed the policy system from opt-out to opt-in. This means that the copyright owner must now give permission before their work is used in Sora.
In addition, OpenAI is also facing a legal dispute with the celebrity video celebrity cameo, because the superior features of Sora have the same name as the company.
In the future, OpenAI plans to expand Sora’s capabilities by adding several new features. One of them is Character Cameos, which allows users to make AI videos with pets or inanimate objects that are converted into live characters. OpenAI is also preparing simple video editing tools, including the ability to combine multiple clips into one whole video. In addition, users will be able to adjust the appearance of their feed, choosing to view content from certain people rather than from all users.
With the expansion to Android, Sora is now officially challenging the short video giants such as TikTok and Instagram Reels. However, for many creators, the main attraction is not just entertainment, but the convenience of creating high quality content without a camera, crew, or studio.
However, OpenAI’s biggest challenge is now not on technology, but on the ethics of use and protection of copyright. Because in an era where faces, voices, and styles can be imitated by AI, the boundary between creativity and abuse is getting blurred.
