Sony Shuts Down PlayStation Disc Production by 2028

Sony’s Shift Toward a Digital Future
Sony is making significant moves toward a digital-first future by restructuring one of its PlayStation disc manufacturing facilities in Austria. This shift comes as the industry continues to move away from physical games, with many predicting that physical media will soon be obsolete. In response, Sony has begun repurposing parts of its manufacturing operations to focus on advanced optical technology.
The decision to restructure the facility follows Sony’s earlier announcement that it plans to phase out PlayStation disc production at its Austrian plant by January 2028. This marks a major turning point for the company as it transitions from traditional disc manufacturing to a new line of business centered around optical microlenses.
A New Focus on Optical Microlenses
According to Dietmar Tanzer, CEO of Sony Digital Audio Disc Corporation (DADC), the Thalgau, Austria factory is being transformed into a site that produces optical microlenses. Speaking with Austrian broadcaster ORF Salzburg, Tanzer confirmed that the transition is already underway. Employees who previously worked on disc manufacturing are now being retrained to support the new operation, with some already involved in microlens testing and pilot production.
This shift is supported by a €30 million investment secured by Sony to expand optical microlens production. Markus Streibl, Head of Micro Optics at Sony DADC, revealed that this investment was made before the company publicly announced its plans to wind down disc manufacturing at the Austrian plant.
For Sony, this represents a long-term strategy aimed at diversifying beyond optical media. By focusing on high-precision optical components, the company hopes to strengthen its position across multiple industries.
Employee Retraining and Transition
The restructuring affects approximately 300 employees at the Thalgau facility, according to The Verge. Rather than implementing immediate layoffs, Sony is prioritizing retraining and redeployment. Workers are being prepared for new roles in microlens production and quality testing as manufacturing operations evolve.
While company executives hope to retain as many employees as possible, they have not guaranteed that every position will remain once disc production officially ends in 2028. This transition highlights the challenges faced by workers as the industry shifts toward digital formats.
Potential Expansion of Microlens Manufacturing
The Austrian factory may be the first of several Sony facilities to undergo similar changes. According to Streibl, Sony aims to begin large-scale production of optical microlenses as early as 2027. If demand continues to grow, other Sony DADC manufacturing sites could eventually transition from producing optical discs to manufacturing advanced optical components.
Despite these changes, there is still a strong community of fans who value physical games. Some supporters have launched a PlayStation Disc petition, which has gathered over 57,000 verified signatures. Collectors, however, find it increasingly difficult to collect cartridges or discs, as more games are released in digital-only formats.
The Future of Physical Games
The upcoming release of “GTA 6” is expected to arrive in a code-in-a-box edition, which has raised concerns among some retailers. This trend reflects a broader shift in the gaming industry toward digital distribution, leaving physical game sales increasingly rare.
As Sony continues to adapt to this changing landscape, the future of physical games remains uncertain. While some players mourn the decline of physical media, others embrace the convenience of digital access. The industry’s evolution shows no signs of slowing down, and companies like Sony are positioning themselves for long-term success in a digital-first world.
