This indicator shows the iridium spark plug needs to be replaced

Most modern cars today use iridium spark plugs. This type of spark plug is claimed to be able to increase engine combustion efficiency and reduce fuel consumption. The use of iridium spark plugs is the main choice because of its ability to provide better performance than nickel spark plugs.

However, like nickel spark plugs, iridium spark plugs also have a limited service life. The average age of iridium spark plugs in cars reaches about 100,000 kilometers. However, if maintenance or maintenance is not carried out properly, the life of the spark plug can be reduced.

“The life of the spark plug can be shorter if the treatment is not up to standard,” explained Diko Oktaviano, Technical Support for OEM and Aftermarket PT Nittera Mobility Indonesia, a manufacturer of NGK spark plugs.

The signs that it is time for iridium spark plugs are to be replaced, among others, is the tip of the electrode which is starting to be short. This is due to the continuous wear and tear process. The thinner the end of the electrode, the more the gap between the electrodes will be.

In addition, the mass electrodes can also wear out. If the mass electrode has started to wear out, the shape will be sharper. This condition indicates that the spark plug is no longer optimal and must be replaced with a new one.

“If it is not replaced, the performance of the engine will decrease,” he added.

Here are some signs that show that the iridium spark plug is time to be replaced:

  • The tip of the electrode is short due to wear and tear that occurs during use.
  • The gap between the electrodes is getting wider, thereby affecting the combustion efficiency.
  • The mass electrode starts to wear and is pointed.
  • Decreased engine performance, such as difficult to start or increased fuel consumption.

Spark plugs that have been damaged or worn not only affect the performance of the engine, but can also cause further damage to other components in the engine. Therefore, it is important to pay attention to the condition of the spark plug periodically and replace it according to the manufacturer’s recommendations.

By paying attention to these signs, vehicle owners can ensure that the car engine continues to work optimally and saves fuel. Proper and routine maintenance will extend the life of the spark plug and maintain the quality of the vehicle’s performance.
