Save fuel with the Idling Stop System (ISS) feature
In an uncertain economic situation, the habit of buying gasoline at a gas station can be an activity that makes us feel lazy. In addition to long queues, the price of non-subsidized fuel that continues to increase can also make the mood worse. Therefore, saving on the use of gasoline is an important thing so that you don’t have to visit gas stations too often.
Along with the development of technology, motorcycle manufacturers are now trying to provide features that help motorists save gasoline. One example is the Idling Stop System (ISS) feature which is owned by several Honda automatic motorcycle models. This feature is designed to turn off the engine automatically when the vehicle is in idle condition for 3 seconds, thereby reducing the waste of gasoline.
How does the ISS work?
The ISS feature works by turning off the engine when the vehicle stops and is not moving. For example, when you stop at a red light, the engine will turn off automatically. This avoids waste of gasoline that occurs when the engine remains running without needing to be used. When the green light is on, the driver only needs to open the gas again, and the engine will turn on again without the need to use the ignition starter.
To activate the ISS feature, the driver simply presses the switch button on the right handlebar panel. Make sure the position of the switch is in the “Idling Stop” position (click down). When it is on, the indicator light on the instrument panel will light up as a sign that the ISS is working.
ISS active conditions
According to Endro Sutarno, AHM Technical Service Division, ISS will only be active if several conditions are met. First, the motor must run at least 10 km / h. Second, the engine temperature must reach 60 degrees Celsius so that the ECM (Engine Coolant Temperature Monitor) can give a signal to turn off the engine if the vehicle is in an idle position for 3 seconds.
In addition, when stopping, make sure the gas is fully closed so that the ISS can work optimally. Thus, there is no compression from the piston that can aggravate the load when the engine is restarted.
Does not drain the battery
Endro also explained that the use of the ISS will not drain the battery. When the engine is restarted by opening the gas, the TP (Throttle Position) sensor will give a signal to the ECM so that the engine starts again using the help of ACG Starter as an alternator. This ensures that the battery is not disturbed. However, if the battery is in an overdrawn condition, the ISS system will not be active.
The presence of ISS in various motorcycle models
Initially, the ISS feature was considered a luxury feature because it was only available on large automatic motorcycles such as PCX. However, along with the development of technology, ISS is now available in almost all Honda automatic motorcycle models, including small models such as the Vario 125, Scoopy, and Beat. This shows that awareness of fuel efficiency is increasing among motorcycle manufacturers.
