German Citizens Worried About Losing Jobs Due to AI

German Public Concerns about the Use of Artificial Intelligence in the Workplace

Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly becoming an important part in various industrial sectors, including in Germany. However, its existence also raises concerns among the public, especially workers. A recent survey showed that around 34 percent of respondents expressed fear of losing their jobs due to the increasingly widespread use of AI.

This survey was conducted in mid-August 2025 and involved more than 2,000 participants from various regions in Germany. The results show that these concerns do not just come from one particular group, but reflect broader trends across the country. Of the many respondents, those who live in urban areas and have a low level of education tend to feel more vulnerable to AI threats.

The use of technology such as AI does bring benefits, such as increasing efficiency and reducing human error. However, on the other hand, this also raises questions about the future of the workforce. Many workers worry that their roles will be replaced by faster and more accurate machines or automated systems.

Apart from this survey, there was a separate report from the Ifo Institute conducted last June. According to the data obtained, more than a quarter of companies in Germany predict that the workforce will decrease in the next five years due to the application of AI technology. This shows that the impact of AI is not only theoretical, but is also starting to be seen in business reality.

Some of the sectors most affected are the manufacturing, customer service and administration industries. Wherever AI is applied, it often replaces tasks previously performed by humans. This sparked discussions about the need for retraining or upgrading skills for workers to remain relevant in an increasingly competitive world of work.

Not everyone is afraid of AI. Most believe that this technology can be a useful tool for increasing productivity. However, a key challenge remains: how to ensure that these changes do not come at the expense of employment opportunities for many people?

Some economists and politicians have proposed solutions, such as new skills training programs, better vocational education, and regulations that ensure that the use of AI does not threaten social stability. They emphasize the importance of striking a balance between technological innovation and protecting workers’ rights.

In this situation, it is important for society and government to work together to face rapid change. With the right preparation, Germany can make AI a tool that strengthens the economy without sacrificing the well-being of its people.
