WhatsApp Will Ban ChatGPT Next Year

WhatsApp Business API Policy Changes That Changed the World of Chatbots

WhatsApp, one of the world’s largest instant messaging apps, has just announced policy changes to their business Application Programming Interface (API). This change has significant implications for users of multi-purpose chatbots, including platforms like ChatGPT and Perplexity. With this new policy, many AI developers and service providers have had to adjust their strategies to continue operating on the WhatsApp platform.

New Policy Regulating the Use of AI on WhatsApp

In their latest policy, WhatsApp added a special section addressing “AI providers” in its business API terms. The focus of this policy is on the use of chatbots for general purposes. This policy will come into effect on January 15, 2026.

According to WhatsApp’s official statement, it is strictly prohibited to access or use the WhatsApp Business Solution, whether directly or indirectly, for the purpose of providing, sending, offering, selling or otherwise making available such technology when such technology is the primary function (not an incidental or additional function) provided for use, as determined by Meta in its sole discretion.

Not All AI Affected

Although this policy limits the use of multipurpose chatbots, Meta stated that this move will not affect businesses that use AI to serve customers on WhatsApp. For example, travel companies that run bots for customer service will not be banned from the service.

According to a Meta spokesperson, WhatsApp’s main focus is supporting tens of thousands of businesses that build customer service experiences within the app. They emphasized that this policy is designed to ensure that WhatsApp remains an efficient and reliable platform for small and large businesses.

Reasons Behind Banning AI Providers

Meta stated that new chatbot use cases are taxing WhatsApp’s systems. The significant increase in message volume and different support needs made it difficult for the company to handle all the requests. This is the main reason behind the new policy issued.

Impact on AI Distribution Platforms

With this policy, WhatsApp will become a more limited platform for the distribution of AI solutions such as assistants or agents. This means that Meta AI will be the only assistant available in the chat application. This shows that WhatsApp wants to focus on business services, not as a distribution place for general AI technology.

Previous Developments: ChatGPT and Perplexity on WhatsApp

Some time ago, OpenAI launched ChatGPT on WhatsApp. Earlier this year, Perplexity also launched its own bot on Meta’s chat application to reach a very wide user base of more than three billion people.

ChatGPT and Perplexity have quite advanced capabilities, such as answering questions, understanding media files, replying to voice messages, and even generating images. However, these features also have the potential to generate a large volume of messages, which could affect WhatsApp system performance.

Conclusion

This WhatsApp Business API policy change has a big impact on multi-purpose chatbot users. Despite the restrictions, Meta remains committed to supporting businesses that use AI in customer service. With this new policy, WhatsApp will focus more on business needs rather than as a general platform for the distribution of AI technology.
