WhatsApp will have an automatic translation feature on iOS

Development of the Automatic Translation Feature in WhatsApp
The instant messaging application WhatsApp is developing an automatic translation feature which aims to make communication between users with different languages easier. This feature will allow messages to be translated directly without the need for manual selection by the user, both in private and group chats.
Previously, reports from certain sources indicated that the WhatsApp update for iOS 25.28.74 includes the ability to translate messages manually. In that version, users can select a message or channel update to see its translation in around 20 languages. This process still maintains end-to-end encryption because it uses Apple’s API locally.
According to information released on March 20, 2026, WhatsApp is now trying to simplify this process. In the latest beta version of iOS 26.11.10.70 available via TestFlight, it was found that WhatsApp is developing a feature that can automatically translate messages in up to 21 languages.
Currently, WhatsApp users still have to select a message and tap the “Translate” option to see the translation results. Although this mechanism provides full control, it can be impractical if many messages need to be translated at once.
With the new feature being developed, users will be able to activate the automatic translation option via the chat info screen. This includes determining the source language and destination language. Once activated, the app will immediately display translations when messages are received, without the need for additional interaction.
To maintain privacy, the translation process remains local on the device. Users need to download language packs so that translation can run instantly without relying on an internet connection. With this approach, messages do not need to be sent to third parties so they remain secure in an end-to-end encryption scheme.
Limitations of the Automatic Translation Feature
Although this feature offers convenience, there are some limitations to its use. The automatic translation feature will only work if all group members send messages in the same language. If there is a language difference in the conversation, the system will not translate the message even if the language is supported.
This feature is still in development and is scheduled to arrive in a future update to iOS. With this feature, it is hoped that it can improve the user experience in communicating across languages effectively and safely.
Benefits and Advantages
Some of the main benefits of the automatic translation feature are:
- Improve communication efficiency: Users no longer need to carry out manual processes to translate messages, saving more time.
- Data security: The translation process is carried out locally, so user data remains safe and is not exposed to third parties.
- Ease of use: Users can set source and destination languages as needed, and activate features automatically without the need for additional interaction.
With technological developments like this, WhatsApp is increasingly strengthening its position as a messaging application that is user-friendly and able to meet global needs.
