5 Electronic Devices That Must Be in Standby Mode

Many of us often forget to turn off electronic devices that are not in use. This can occur due to habit or lack of awareness of energy consumption that occurs when the device is in standby mode. In fact, even though they are not being used, electronic devices still consume electricity. In fact, this can have a negative impact on electricity bills and property security.
Standby mode is a state in which the device remains connected to a power source, but is not fully operational. In this state, the device still requires power to maintain certain functions such as displaying a digital clock, activating sensors, or keeping components warm so they can restart quickly. Even though the amount of power consumed may seem small, the impact can be significant over time.
According to research from the Energy Saving Trust, the average household spends between £50 to £86 (around Rp. 1 million to Rp. 1.9 million) every year just on electricity usage from devices in standby mode. This is a strong reason to start changing electricity usage habits at home.
Here are some electronic devices that should not be left in standby mode:
TV
Leaving the TV in standby mode can significantly increase electricity consumption. According to Mitchell Wray from National Insulation Supplies, the costs could reach £60.27 per year (around Rp. 1.3 million). The power continuously supplied to the TV is used to maintain features such as the clock display, sensor lights, and keep components warm. To save electricity, it is best to turn the TV off at the switch when not in use.
Game Console
Game consoles are also devices that are quite wasteful when in standby mode. Like TVs, game consoles use continuous power to maintain features such as updates or remote activation. If you frequently use your game console, it’s best to unplug it when you’re not using it. Nick Bunce from AO suggests this to avoid wasting energy.
Microwave
Even though microwaves have relatively low standby power, these devices still consume electricity to keep the digital clock running. The costs can reach around £9.04 per year (Rp. 199 thousand) if not turned off properly. Even though it’s not very expensive, energy savings are still important.
Coffee Maker Machine
A coffee maker left in standby mode can be a major cause of standby energy usage. The clock or auto-off feature that is continuously active makes this device consume more electricity. The costs can reach around £15.05 per year (Rp. 343 thousand). So, it’s best to turn off the coffee machine when not in use.
Smart Speakers
Smart speakers like Alexa or Google Assistant are also wasteful devices when in standby mode. Nick Bunce points out that power usage in standby mode is almost as great as in use. So, if you are traveling, it’s best to turn off the speakers to save energy.
If it is not possible to turn off all devices, an alternative solution is to use a smart plug. This tool can help manage electricity use efficiently and reduce energy waste. In this way, you not only save money, but also contribute to global energy savings.
