The History of the 8th Generation Toyota Corolla in Indonesia

In mid-December 1995, the 8th generation Toyota Corolla (AE111) was launched in Indonesia and immediately sold to the public in January 1996. This car has the affectionate call “All New Corolla”. This name or nickname is carried because the design has undergone a total change compared to the previous generation known as Greco aka Great Corolla (Gen VII).

Previously, changes were only limited to lights and grille. However, in this generation, the difference is almost total, aka “all new”. Even though he uses the name “All New”, there are actually many components from his brother, namely Greco (AE100). An example is the engine that initially relies on a 1,600 cc 4A-FE engine similar to Greco. This kitchen runway is combined with a 5-speed manual transmission and a 4-speed automatic.

Changes to the 1998 facelift

It was only when the facelift which was launched by PT Toyota-Astra Motor on Wednesday, March 25, 1998, was that the Corolla got a new engine, namely 7A-FE 1,800 cc. The All New Corolla with this new engine is coded AE112 by Toyota. In addition to the larger engine, this car also gets changes to the exterior and interior.

Exterior and interior changes

For example, the grill now has a vertical line and uses a more rounded diamond cut model lamp. Likewise with the taillights, the size and shape become wider. The All New Corolla 1.8 is available in two variants, namely XLI and SEG.

The SEG type is the most complete type because it is equipped with airbags, ABS, digital AC, and automatic radio antennas. Meanwhile, in the XLI type these features are not available. XLI is only equipped with Power Window, Electric Mirror, Power Steering, and Central Lock.

In addition, the XLI type, side molding, door handle, and trunk list are black, while the seg type is body colored.

At the time of launching, the All New XLI was sold at a price of Rp. 139,000,000 on-the-road DKI Jakarta. While the SEG M/T type is sold at a price of Rp. 120,675,000 and the A/T Rp. 155,500,000.

The End of the 8th Generation Era

All New Corolla 1.8 is the last 8th generation soldier in Indonesia. He had to retire in 2001 and was replaced with the Toyota Corolla Altis (9th generation). Altis is a sub-brand of Corolla for the Asian market. This Altis targets potential customers in Asia who want a more luxurious version of Corolla.
