The trend of using electric vehicles in Indonesia
The use of electric vehicles (EV) in Indonesia continues to increase in line with the expansion of the charging infrastructure driven by PT PLN (Persero) together with various partners. However, there are still many users who do not understand the different types of charging stations available and their suitability with the battery capacity of electric vehicles.
Gregorius Adi Trianto, Executive Vice President of Corporate Communications and TJSL PLN, explained that the development of the electric vehicle ecosystem does not only focus on infrastructure development, but also to educate the public about how to use it properly. “PLN not only builds charging infrastructure, but is also committed to educating the public so that the use of electric vehicles is easier, safer, and more comfortable. By understanding the types of charging stations available, users can optimize the charging process according to their mobility needs,” he said.
In general, there are four types of charging stations that can be used by electric vehicles according to the power capacity and battery charging requirements:
Standard Charging
Standard charging is a charging method using alternating current (AC) with a capacity of 7 kW and below. The charging process with this method usually takes about 6 to 12 hours, depending on the vehicle’s battery capacity. This type of charging is most widely used at home (home charging) and is suitable for electric vehicles with small battery capacity and plug-in hybrid vehicles.Charging Medium
Medium charging also uses AC current with a power capacity of more than 7 kW to 22 kW. With a larger capacity, the charging time can last about 2 to 4 hours. This facility is generally available in offices, shopping centers, or public parking areas, making it suitable for use when the vehicle is parked within a few hours. This type of charging usually uses a wallbox charger device.Fast Charging
Fast charging uses direct current (DC) with a power capacity of more than 22 kW to 50 kW. With this technology, electric vehicle battery charging can reach up to 80 percent in about 30 to 60 minutes. This facility is usually available at Public Electric Vehicle Charging Stations (SPKLU) and is very suitable for use when traveling long distances or in locations with high vehicle mobility.Ultra Fast Charging
Ultra Fast Charging also uses DC current with a power capacity above 50 kW. With this capacity, charging electric vehicles can be done in about 10 to 20 minutes. This type of charging is ideal for electric vehicles with a large battery capacity that requires fast charging during the trip.
One-stop service for electric vehicle users
As support for the ease of use of electric vehicles, PLN also presents technology through the PLN Mobile application which is equipped with the Electric Vehicle Digital Services (EVDS) menu as a one-stop service for EV. In this menu, PLN also presents the Trip Planner feature that allows users to plan travel routes while determining charging points more efficiently during the trip.
In addition, PLN Mobile is also equipped with the Antreev feature that allows users to monitor the availability of SPKLU and make reservations for digital charging queues, so that the charging process can be carried out more practically and efficiently.
