Sony removes hundreds of PS Store games in quality drive

Sony has taken another significant step in cleaning up its digital storefront, removing hundreds of low-quality PS4 and PS5 titles in a single night. This move highlights the company\’s growing intolerance for subpar software within its ecosystem.

Throughout this year alone, Sony has delisted over a thousand such games. This demonstrates their commitment to maintaining high standards and ensuring that \”cash grabs\” do not have a place in their platform.

Several developers and publishers found themselves affected by this purge. Not only were individual titles removed, but entire catalogs were wiped out. Companies like Welding Byte, GoGame Console Publisher, and VRCForge have been completely removed from the PS Store. The initial reports about these removals originated from the PSN Profiles forum, and later confirmed by sources like Pushsquare.com.

The nature of these games is quite puzzling. Instead of offering meaningful or innovative gameplay, they are essentially low-effort \”asset flips.\” These games often mimic the names and art styles of legitimate indie titles, deceiving consumers into purchasing them.

Some of the most ridiculous titles removed include:

  • Jesus Simulator
  • Watermelon Fruits Puzzle
  • Card Shop Game Store: TCG Simulator

These games serve no real purpose other than to sell easy Platinum trophies, which players can acquire without putting in any effort. They are designed to artificially boost PSN profiles of players who are unwilling to work for their achievements.

The Whack-a-Mole Problem for Sony

The issue with these knock-off titles isn\’t just that they are bad games. Rather, they are specifically crafted to deceive customers by imitating the names and art styles of legitimate, popular indie games.

For example, a game titled \”I Am Busy Digging a Hole\” might look similar to the legitimate title \”A Game About Digging a Hole,\” but it\’s actually a knock-off published by Welding Byte to trick customers into buying it.

This has turned into a frustrating game of Whack-a-Mole for Sony. As they remove one problematic title, another nearly identical one appears on the PlayStation Store. While regulations and actions against such titles have become stricter, Sony\’s current moderation strategy still has limitations.

What Can Be Done?

Should Sony implement a stricter manual review process for indie games to prevent these issues at the source? Many players have accidentally purchased knock-off games on the PS Store. Their experiences could provide valuable insights into how to improve the platform.
