Which is easier: SOHC or DOHC? This is the difference

Motorcycle engine type: SOHC and DOHC

For motorcycle owners, maybe not all know about the type of engine used in their vehicle. Two types of machines that are often encountered are SOHC (Single Over Head Camshaft) and DOHC (Double Over Head Camshaft). Both types of engines are generally found in sport bikes, and have their own advantages and disadvantages.

SOHC is a system that has one noken axle in the cylinder head, which is in charge of regulating two valves, namely the intake valve and the exhaust valve (exhaust). Meanwhile, DOHC has two US Noken. One axle noken regulates two intake valves, while the other axles regulates two exhaust valves. This difference makes DOHC superior in terms of performance because of the four valves that work separately.

However, is DOHC always better? According to Koko Adiyaksa, Workshop Manager of Sportisi Motorsport, for daily use, especially in Jakarta, there is no significant difference between these two types of machines. This is caused by the condition of the road which is often jammed and does not allow the motor to run at high speed.

DOHC is currently widely used by motorcycle manufacturers because of its ability to provide greater power. With two intake valves and two exhaust valves, the process of combustion and exhaust gas becomes more efficient, so that the thrust of the motor increases. Koko emphasized that if you are looking for maximum performance, DOHC is the right choice because it has a better power distribution.

On the other hand, the SOHC machine also has its own advantages. Even though it only has one noken axle, some manufacturers use additional technology on the valve so that the engine is still able to supply power evenly at each engine speed. In addition, SOHC is easier to maintain and tends to be more fuel efficient.

advantages and disadvantages of SOHC and DOHC

  • SOHC
  • easier to maintain
  • More fuel efficient
  • Suitable for daily use
  • Have a simple construction

  • DOHC

  • Better performance due to four valves
  • greater thrust
  • Suitable for use on open streets
  • more complex in construction and maintenance

The selection between SOHC and DOHC depends on the needs and preferences of the user. If you are looking for a high-performance motorcycle, DOHC can be an option. However, if the main need is fuel resistance and efficiency, SOHC may be more appropriate.

Recommendations for motor sport fans

Koko explained that the choice of machines is also influenced by the brand, model, and budget available. Every manufacturer has a strategy in choosing the type of machine to be used. Therefore, before buying a motorbike, it is important to consider daily needs and driving style.

By understanding the difference between SOHC and DOHC, motorcycle users can be wiser in choosing a vehicle that suits their needs and desires. Whether it’s for daily needs or sports activities, each type of machine has its own advantages.
