BI: QRIS Transactions Reach 57 Million Users

The use of QRIS is widespread throughout Indonesia

Bank Indonesia (BI) noted that the use of the Quick Response Code Indonesian Standard (QRIS) has reached 57 million users until the first half of 2025. This figure shows the rapid development of the digital payment system used by the Indonesian people.

In addition, QRIS has also been implemented by as many as 39.3 million merchants. Of this amount, around 93.16 percent are micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs). Deputy Governor of BI, Filianingsih Hendrata, revealed this data in the Kick Off QRIS Jelajah Indonesia 2025 event which was held in Yogyakarta.

Filianingsih said that the transaction volume through QRIS until the first semester of 2025 reached 6.05 billion transactions with a total value of Rp 579 trillion. “Through the spirit of culture and innovation, we hope that the digitization of the payment system can continue to be expanded in a sustainable manner to all corners of the country, as well as being deeply rooted in the lives of Indonesian people,” he said in an official statement.

Introduction of QRIS Without Scan (Qris Tap)

In the series of Kick Off QRIS Jelajah Indonesia 2025 events, BI also launched a new innovation called QRIS Without Scan (QRIS TAP) for the transportation sector in the Special Region of Yogyakarta. This technology uses Near Field Communication (NFC) as a faster and easier alternative payment method.

QRIS TAP is designed to make it easier for users to make transactions without the need to open an application or scan code. This innovation is expected to increase efficiency in the use of digital payment systems.

Use of QRIS Abroad

Currently, QRIS can be used in several neighboring countries such as Malaysia, Thailand, and Singapore. BI previously announced that QRIS will go into use in Japan on August 17. However, according to Filianingsih, this use is still in the first stage, namely Indonesia Outbound.

“So Indonesians who go to Japan can use their QRIS to scan Japanese QR,” he said at an online press conference on July 16, 2025.

For the second stage, namely Indonesia Inbound—where Japanese citizens use their country’s QR to scan QRIS—is expected to be implemented by the end of this year. BI will also launch the QRIS Sandbox with China on 17 August. This sandbox trial includes both outbound and inbound transactions.
