Common types of car headlights
Car lights not only serve as a means of lighting, but also become an important part of the appearance and safety of driving. In the market, there are several types of lamps that are often used by car owners, including bi-LED, LED, and HID (High Intensity Discharge). Each type has different characteristics, advantages, and ways of working.
Fredy, an officer at the Adventure Accessories Store located at MGK Kemayoran, Jakarta, explained that the main difference between the three types of lamps lies in the way light is reflected and the electrical system used. He said:
“Bi-LED has a flatter light due to the reflection of the reflector. So the light is more focused,” he said.
“Meanwhile, LEDs have a radiance of light similar to halogens, because the light produced is still somewhat dispersed. However, the level of information is still better than halogens,” he added.
He also explained that the LED is equipped with an inverter to balance the electric current, making it safer for the car battery. In contrast to HID, which also has a current balancer, but the shape is in the form of a larger module and the system is more complicated. Therefore, HID installation tends to be more complicated. In terms of maintenance, LEDs are easier than HID.
Bi-LED: the latest efficient technology
Bi-LED is a development of LED technology which is now widely used in modern cars. The name “BI” comes from the ability of a lamp unit that can function as a high beam (high beam) and a close light (low beam).
The lighting system uses a projector with a flat and focus light reflection, so that the spotlight is more focused and does not dazzle the rider from the opposite direction. In addition, the bi-LED is known to be more efficient and durable, making it a favorite choice for upper middle class cars.
LED: low power consumption and easy maintenance
LED lights usually work using a semiconductor chip that emits light when electrified. This technology does not use filaments like halogens and does not require xenon gases like HID.
LED light is brighter than halogen, but still slightly spread depending on the design of the lamp reflector. The advantage of LED lies in low power consumption, cooler working temperature, and easy maintenance. Therefore, LEDs are often used for various functions ranging from main lights, DRL (daytime running light), brake lights, to turn signals.
HID: Bright light with complex system
Unlike the previous two types, HID (High Intensity Discharge) lamps use xenon gas and high electric current to produce a very bright bluish white light. HID was popular because the light intensity was strong and the spotlight was far.
However, the system is more complex because it requires a ballast or additional modules to counter the electric current. The larger size also makes the installation more complicated than the LED. Even so, HID remains an option for users who want a brighter and sharper light.
Selection of lamps as needed
Each type of lamp has its own advantages and disadvantages. The choice of lamp type must be adjusted to the needs of the user, both in terms of performance, cost, and ease of maintenance. By understanding the characteristics of each type of lamp, car owners can choose the option that best suits their needs and preferences.
